Book on strega tradition

Post by Romez »

Hello,
I was curious about the Strega (sp) tradition, the italian witchcraft, and I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good book to start off with?
thank you

Look here.

My own advice: stay away from Grimassi and others of that ilk.

It's Wicca with Italianate influences: to wit,Stregheria is a modern invention, whereas Strega simply means witch.....and It's easy,oh so easy, actually. to confuse or conflate the two. [thumbup]

Delve into the social anthrology and folklore.Mental shoe leather will be worn out quickly doing so,but it's worth it. [grin]

And this:

The World of Witches by Julio Baroja.

"He lived his words, spoke his own actions and his story and the story of the world ran parallel."

An interesting work on this subject is 'Etruscan Magic and Occult Remedies' by Charles Godfrey Leland

http://www.amazon.com/Etruscan-Occult-R ... 1161404449

He went around Northern Italy in the early 20th Century and talked to all the old stregas he could find!

I forgot this book, it is another good one in my library. It deals more generally with the Classical World but much of that was carried over in specifically Italian folk magic. Here is a free PDF edition:
