What do gods do in their free time?
What do gods do in their free time?
This might sound silly, but do gods ever rest? Do they, when they are not evoked(or invoked, whatever) and when they are not answering prayers? Do they go together for a party of 'godly golf' or go to a 'godly jazz club' [happy2] ?
Do forgive me if this sound immature, but this has been troubling me for ages (figuratively)

Does a river ever take a rest from flowing?
"The path of the Sage is called
'The Path of Illumination'
he who gives himself to this path
is like a block of wood
that gives itself to the chisel-
cut by cut it is honed to perfection"

Toying with our lives, although part of their main duties, is probably the highlight of their day. Either that or God and Satan have a game of poker every once and a while.
Re: What do gods do in their free time?
Depend what you means by the Gods. A metaphor for the diversity of Nature or powerful Beings ruling over the Universe?
Re: What do gods do in their free time?
Have you read no mythology? Most of them play lots of pranks and tricks, and they have lots and lots and looooooots of sex - with each other and anything else they can figure out how to screw. Then the wives get jealous, which gets us back to lots of bloody pranks and tricks.

A good point, mythology.
But between each other? Like Zeus and Amon-Ra going to a cafe once in a while, boasting about accomplisments or discussing destinies for mortals [rofl]

All of the above, really. They're always in the act of producing and reproducing into something bigger, the mythologies are just a personification of that.RockDemon wrote:Shinichi wrote:Have you read no mythology? But you're forgetting time is a human concept. The divines are there all the time. They basically have no free time, and have all eternity for free time, at the same time. I guess they just can't tell, but who knows.

This reminds me of a great theologian question: What did God do before the creation?

A lot of them play games / tricks with us mortals. Sometimes dreams even allow us to see the games they play.
Some teach us certain facts to open our minds to gear us up for the coming conflict.
Imagine we are chess pieces and they show us certain paths that will allow them to win.
Edit: Oh and they constantly trawl the Internet for people who have visions of places that only immortals have access to.

Re: What do gods do in their free time?
Oh no. Theological questions :-D
While we're at it, what about the one with the stone?
"Can [an omnipotent being] create a stone so heavy that it cannot lift it?" This question generates a dilemma. The being can either create a stone it cannot lift, or it cannot create a stone it cannot lift. If the beingcancreate a stone that it cannot lift, then it seems that it can cease to be omnipotent. If the beingcannotcreate a stone it cannot lift, then it seems it is already not omnipotent"

Hi Khazargo
Your question is ; "What do gods do in their free time"
Most people like a quick answer. The quick answer is that if you look at whatever they're a god of, and see what THAT is doing - how it responds to the changing situation around it, it's the god that's doing it
In attempting to explain what gods are, http://www.polytheism.net/ trots out the sloppy, lazy, unresearched presumption that "The belief in multiple gods is probably the result of an earlier belief in vaguely defined spirits, demons and other supernatural forces"
With this as a background, who can blame modern occultists for knowing no better
Polytheism originated from the belief that a known or unknown supreme being first created something, then gave that 'something' life and personality, and then used those personalities as the building blocks of everything that exists
The heart of polytheism is that although everything around you is matter, that matter is really energy, all energy is life, and all life has personality
So as there are innumerable gods in The Creation, perhaps a million times more than there are humans, and as they exist at varying levels of power and in all different conditions, the question "What do gods do" is too broad. They all do different things. It would be easier to answer the question "What do humans do in their free time"
Here in the UK, the gods of Nature are probably pacing up and down, waiting for the Wiccans and the Pagans to produce some political action that might prevent the countryside being concreted over
The goddess of Time will be waiting patiently for occultists to knuckle down to some serious meditation so that change can be achieved
Satan and the gods of addiction will be working flat out pouring slaves (helots) into the Upper Hell for the use of Warriors
And in the Upper Hell the gods of War are even now preparing, with professional pride, to march out once again and lead the world to war
Does that answer your question?

Gods do not have such a free time like we people do.

Re: What do gods do in their free time?
The human created concept of free time exists only because we humans spend time not doing what we feel like doing i.e what we should be doing. We therefore have separated our time in two halves, the time we do as we please and the other time where we do what we are told we must do.
I don't believe anything more elevated, higher, more grown, can have such concept. For they just do as they are. They are not out of alignment with themselves. They just are and do.

They roleplay.
No one else has ever heard the rolling of dice when we decide to sneak up on those pesky kobolds?
