I found this organization on my internets travels:
Prison Dharma Network
Apparently, such exercises in 'compassion' and 'meditation' and 'refraining' actually have a positive impact on rehabilitation as often prisoners lack empathy, calmness and self-control.
Are you involved in this group? What are your thoughts on teaching the Dharma to inmates? Seems the perfect environment: A monastic rigid discipline: They live in cells after all, their diet, exercise etc is predetermined.
Anyway, check it out. I joined but haven't found anyone from my area or a proper course.

93,
I am not sure if this is the organization that Ram Dass worked with, but it is certainly the same idea. I approve, especially since our penitentiary system is ridiculous and non-rehabilitative.

I always tell myself that if I'm incarcerated for one reason or another, I'm just going to become a sadhu.

There was a very good story in the "Blue jean Buddhist" book about prison dharma. I think its a great thing to do, and so much better to give the prisoners something to do and work at, rather than just make them passively pray on sundays lol.

It's actually something I struggle with a lot.
Maybe I should start a new thread...
Because I have a girlfriend of 4 years, and I know that she wouldn't understand. The suffering I would cause her-- for my own selfish reasons-- would be less than dharmic. Why wait till then? Become a renunciate now!
