Mahakala Dharma Protector Short Sadhana and mantra

Post by Daud »

Mahakala is an incredibly powerful dharma protector and is the wrathful emination of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Mahakala protects the dharma and all of it's practitioners as well as any sentient beings who would summon him for noble purpose. Mahakala requires no initiation or formal practice to summon but is a very powerful protector so use wisely.

Sadhana:

Quick acting Avalokita, homage to you!
Wearing ankelts, you trample Ganesha.
Mahakala you wear a tiger skin loincloth
fully adorned with snake ornaments on your skin
the first right hand holds a drigu, the middle a mala

the last plays violently a damaru drum;
the left hands hold a skullcup and a three-pronged lance,
and, likewise, a noose, which serves for tying up.
Your wrathful mouth completely bares its fangs.

Your three eyes are fierce. The hair of your head blazes upward.
Your forehead is properly anointed with red lead.
on your crown, Aksobya's royal presence is fixed.
You wear a great necklace of fifty human heads, dripping blood.

On your crown you are adorned with five dry, jeweled skulls.
You come from your tree and accept our torma offering, (Mudra or mental offering is fine)
Glorious six-armed one, homage and praise to you!
Sternly protect the doctrine of the Buddha and all it's practitioners!

Sternly praise the height of power of the Jewels!
For us - teachers, disciples and entourage -
Please quell all bad conditions and obscurations,
And grant us quickly whatever siddhis we wish!

Mantra: OM VAJRA MAHAKALA KSHIM KSHETRA VIGHAN VINAYA TRA HUM HUM PHAT PHAT SVAHA

Forgive me , I am not that well versed in buddhism . Do you believe Mahakala to be an actual sentient spirit or just a form of Avalokitesvara , or simple simbol ? Basicly if you could explain your views on the meaning of ''emanation'' as a buddhist term.
Also , the last verse of your 'sadhana' seems to contradict your initial statements.

Basically an emanation is a form of a superior being, manifested usually to master a specific task or have some unique trait. I understand Mahakala is a diety of some kind that pre dates Avalokitesvara and am fairly certain that he used his form, but yes it is still Avalokitesvara the bodhisattva of compassion.

According to buddhism powerful beings can emanate several form bodies. When you attain the first superior ground you are able to emanate one-hundred different forms and at complete enlightenment there is said to be no limit to how many different forms of yourself you can emanate.
Whacked out stuff indeed.

Very interesting. In the idea of '' concept personification '' found in other systems there is the belief that certain traits for example can manifest themselves as conscious beings. Thus , the greek god Ares may be the conscious form of war , destruction and madness on the batlefield , while the hindu god Shiva may be the destroying nature of existence.
In modern buddhism there is this presence of intense secularism , the doctrines of these sects are not always agreeing with each other , so it's good to have an answer from a practicioner.

Yeah, it's incredibly aggravating to see so many buddhist fighting over trivial matters. I was taught by the best though, since i was a kid. He taught all his students to ignore trivial questions and focus on our journey of spiritual increase. If you have any other questions regarding buddhism feel free to PM me.
