A spell of mine calls for a broom...I'm a simple girl and this confused me some what
By broom, did the spell mean, the broom like fairytale witches with the hat and wart on their nose used to ride? Or a broom you'd use to sweep your garage?

I just read my post and realised how stupid I sound ^_^ But no really, I'm still confused...

Hello!

Well it could be one of two things. It could either be a broom as in that thing with which one might sweep the floor (we use a traditional besom for sweeping our circle before coven meetings) or it could be the herb broom (sarothamus scoparius). People here in England once used the plant as a material with which to sweep the floor, hence the name.

If it is the herb, which I'm guessing is most likely as why one would be putting their broom into a spell I have no idea(!), then it is a herb native to us here in Britain and naturalised in North America. As a result it is easier to find naturally here in the UK but I'm not too sure about America. It tends to grow on heathland and in woodland clearings, most especially where the soil is a bit dry and sandy. In appearance I always think it looks a bit like gorse but without the prickles. It is a herb ruled by Mars, and in common with the use of the besom iteslf, is much utilised in the creation of sacred space and for conscration purposes. Interestingly, as a medicinal herb it is a great diuretic and fantastic in an infusion for the relief of fluid retention.

I get the impression that the broom is used like a tool? If it is, then you'd use a besom for the ritual effect. If not, go with Martin's info on the herb.

To and for by,

While we're on the subject of "Brooms Galore" I hope it's okay if I give my friend, 'Robin The Broomsquire' a plug. He makes absolutely gorgeous besoms (broomsticks), traditionally crafted from Scotch Broom.

Even his website is a delight:

Enjoy! :)
