Teachers?

I've been seeing a lot of posts about those who work with teachers of a certain craft and I'd like to know how to go about finding them. Books can do a lot, but working with an actual person, I think, would be very beneficial. I do live in the United States though, so my first thought is that those who have teachers live in another part of the world. I have quite a bit of trust issues as far as teachers and groups go as for all I know they're only doing it for the money...
