hello [happyface]
i've been wondering, when working with symbols af all kinds: how much does the history attached to the symbol actually channel into my perception of the symbol?
my first guess was that the history will invariably be part of the symbol and influence it. but perhaps there is also an „eternal“ part of a symbol, which stays exactly as it is forever and can be approached like this, without the historical baggage?
so that there are actually many shades, or layers, of a symbol that can be approached, and not just a single one?
how to you perceive this?

the history of a symbol
Re: the history of a symbol
It depends. Symbols like the pentagram have been in most cultures, so there's nothing to really rub off. Meanwhile the scarab is a specifically Egyptian symbol, so it will usually carry with it Egyptian ideology. The cross is the only symbol I have trouble making subjective, because I just don't want that association at all.
