The Emerald Tablets: as an Initiatory Key

I've been reading the Emerald Tablets, which can be found here: http://www.alchemylab.com/thothtablets0.htm

I've only read the first 6 chapters so far, of the 15. But I had to stop on the sixth, to share what I had read...

The sixth chapter/tablet is called: "The Key of Magic"

In this chapter is revealed the very Key of Magick, to bring Light to that Darkened place...that he may rise victorious as the Sun of Light.

In this chapter is not only the Key given, but a Spell to turn that Key. The excerpt is as follows, and I encourage all to experiment with it, relating their results.

"Knowledge brings wisdom and wisdom is power.
Attain and ye shall have power o'er all.

Seek ye first a place bound by darkness.
Place ye a circle around about thee.
Stand erect in the midst of the circle.
Use thou this formula, and you shalt be free.
Raise thou thine hands to the dark space above thee.
Close thou thine eyes and draw in the LIGHT.
Call to the SPIRIT OF LIGHT through the Space-Time,
using these words and thou shalt be free:
"Fill thou my body, O SPIRIT OF LIfe,
fill thou my body with SPIRIT OF LIGHT.
Come from the FLOWER
that shines through the darkness.
Come from the HALLS where the Seven Lords rule.
Name them by name, I, the Seven:
THREE, FOUR, FIVE,
and SIX, SEVEN, EIGHT--Nine.
By their names I call them to aid me,
free me and save me from the darkness of night:
UNTANAS, QUERTAS, CHIETAL,
and GOYANA, HUERTAL, SEMVETA--ARDAL.
By their names I implore thee,
five me from darkness
and fill me with LIGHT

Know ye, O man, that when ye have done this,
ye shall be free from the fetters that bind ye,
cast off the bondage of the brothers of night.
See ye not that the names have the power
to free by vibration the fetters that bind?
Use them at need to free thou thine brother
so that he, too, may come forth from the night.

Thou, O man, art thy brother's helper.
Let him not lie in the bondage of night.

Now unto thee, give I my magic.
Take it and dwell on the pathway of LIGHT.

LIGHT unto thee, LIFE unto thee,
SUN may thou be on the cycle above."

Thanks for posting that link - I am a very big fan of the emerald tablet of hermes, of which the above are not. At first it looked like some cheesy ass rip off of the Sefer Yetzirah combined with the Nec (which it may be) but hell, may as well read further and then make up my mind.

hmm, well i think it seems to me comparable to the analaysis of the key word and perhaps other harmonizing rites like the QC, still i have yet to calculate the names and language.

However, my thought on THESE "emerald tablets", after reading them; is that-while I have found the Initiatory Key in here, the Key to Magick-I don't believe that this is THE Thoth that went forth teaching his Magick to the barbarian men of Khem, who before he arrived "dwelled in caves of rock."

Reason being, THIS Thoth speaks of a future time when it will become necessary to give a large amount of people this same power...so they too can wield it. However, the Law of Thelema is rather clear on "Few & Secret".

And the power that I feel during the Thelemic Invokations is vastly different than this one...even though THIS Thoth claims that the power is that of the Solar Disk.

But I will still look into practicing the spells in the last chapter of the book to see if I can either confirm or deny such suspicions regarding the veracity of the material to this claim, that these were the mysteries passed down to Khem.

here the text lays out the seven lords in the primary concept of them;

Three holds the key of all hidden magic, creator he of the Halls of the Dead; sending forth power, shrouding

Four is he who looses the power. Lord, he, of Life to the children of men.

Seven is he who is Lord of the vastness, master of Space and the key of the Times.

here i think the lords are either a reversed verion of the spheres or a mixed association between planetary and sphere vlaues,

Three, holds the key of all magics and is the lord of the dead, it indicates both binah and yesod distinctly,

the dead yes they are usually on the astral, the keys of magic are an indication of both hod and yesod, both have many deities thatare associated though,

it speaks of yesod more than binah, but still this is weird and confusing,

now Four, he who loses power, this is still on progress with me, however the remark, lord he of thelifes of men screams chokmahin my ears but still, it may indicate tiphareth which is rather annoying,

now about Five, the statement of "lord of all magic-key to the word that resounds..." indicates archtypal influence and chesed, as far as i know,

Six couldnt be clearer, tiphareth and the beautiful hidden path are obvious,

Seven, Lord of vastness and time and space, that indicates both chokmah and binah, in one, chokmah is space binah is time,

Eight the power that weighs the balance, this is usually a chokmah value, the harmonious change, but curiously it indicates organised force as well, that is either chesed or in extreme binah,

Nine, i have one association which will be kether,

so far it appears to me that the seven lords here indicate the seven planes on the tree of life, rather than the specific sphere, the planetary association is apparent and obvious, wel people what do you think?

Not to threadjack or discredit, but I have to ask why thelema is bent toward the Egyptian. Why isn't there the inclusion of Teutonic religion, or even something closer to the British isles like druidic beliefs?

It's said that every religion has had for itself, it's engaging similarities with every other religion on the planet.

Thelema, if you are willing to investigate, makes the claim that it has perfectly united all of those similarities to achieve the Truth behind the mysteries of those symbols.

Hi there .... I've been reading the book and it is very interesting .... I looked everywhere ( that is how I got here) trying to find the meaning of the names of the "seven lords" but could not find it. Can I ask you, where you got from what each name means ?
