Open Handed Magick

Open handed magick is, as far as I understand it, magick that is done without the use of materials and is done quickly on the fly to achieve quick results.

Its something I have been meaning to develop and test for a while and I am open to suggestions.

I am reminded of this right now as I have a little trick I have been using to control pain, which is on my mind right now, as I have a painful tooth ache developing.

This works for low level acute pain of all kinds.

So sit quietly for a moment and clear your mind. if possible, though I have done this while driving too.
Bring your mind to the location of the pain and allow the pain to take on a visible form in your mind. So for example, my toothache is currently a small bright red pulsing blob.
Visualise the blob, or whatever then bring your hand to the location of the pain, either physically or just in your minds eye, and imagine plucking the visualised pain out of you body.
Then visualise destroying it. I sometimes blow on it till it freezes then crush it between my fingers, or throw it in the air and shoot it with a laser gun, whatever sounds like the most fun to you.
Then clap your hands and think of something completely different, and don't give the pain any more thought.

This has been working for me for years. I don't recall where I first learned it but I used it often and never thought of it as magick until I started practising magick and realised it takes the form of a magickal ritual. Focus and centre yourself, state and visualise your intent, create a symbolic representation of it, perform an act that expresses what you want to happen, banish and return to normal consciousness.

I read another technique a while back, I think on Tommie Kelly's blog, where you visualise your intent as an energy sphere and push it where you want to have an effect. I haven't tried this one.

A while ago I tried a different technique of my own. I was in a situation where I could not write things down so I had to do it in my head on the fly, so I stated my intent and used the letter subtraction method of sigil creation but just created a nonsense word with it instead, then focused on repeating the word faster and faster under my breath until it just became a single syllable sound then mentally exploded it into the universe. It worked. (got drunk people removed who were taking during a movie. That'll teach them to talk during Guardians of the Galaxy when there is a chaos magickian in the room.) [crazy]

Does anyone else have experience with this kind of stuff?

I used to experiment a lot with pain removal, it worked well enough most of the time. But I skipped other parts and just visualized my self with no pain [rofl]
But then I got lazy and just went for pain killers, I just visualize it working, infuse with extra believe it will work great, extra placebo. It takes less effort. I got so lazy over the years I feel ashamed [blush]

I am glad there is a name for it. This is what I have been doing for years. It is/was the primary methodology that I have used with great success. It is only now, after 20+ years that I am really working to understand the ritual aspect. Which as I gain a deeper understanding, only reinforces and expands the work I have done in the past.

The best way I can explain how it feels to me is as follows:

In the past it was like I was forcing my will through a key hole. In order to get better results I had to focus my will so intently and so powerfully that it could pass through such a small opening. Doing ritual work has changed the key hole to a door way, and what took hours of intense focus is more like a blast of pure will that leaves my body with a feeling of ecstasy.

One positive thing about learning this way seems to me that I have develop a great reservoir of will power.

I would look into qigong, which has to do with generating/circulating energy coupled with visualization techniques for healing application. It's been in development for several thousand years so there are many styles and techniques.

Indeed. You are not the first to suggest Qigong to me recently so it is something intend to look into. Energy work is something that I have yet to get around to and Qigong sounds like the perfect place to start. Thanks.

Vap0rWar3, I see what you are saying about the keyhole analogy. I feel that ritual is how we add more meaning to our acts of will and enable it to more easily change things and express more interesting results.

I guess open handed magick is more like a blunt tool but still more of a tool than just a wish, but sometimes all you need is an old hammer.

Motumbá Àse,

To the initial post, symbols are very good for that. I usually use runes in that matter. Tracing symbols and focusing in certain mantramsm, etc, helps create desired effects. The same with certain Reiki symbols, Runes, Sigils, Pentagrams, Words of Power, Mudras, etc.

That's how I work "open hand" magics.

I don't quite understand why would you consider it as a "blunt tool"?
Maybe it's more like: If some particular "tool" would be my main and I'd be working exclusively with it daily for years until I achieve level of expertise or even perfection to be able to deliver surgical precision with that "tool", that wouldn't make your tools "blunt", it's just that I don't have the skill necessary to deliver any kind of precision with anything other but what I've been working all this time, or something like that, theoretically, no?

I guess I consider it a blunt tool because I am not very practised at it and when I compare it to doing a full ritual for the same result, it seems lacking. But yeah I agree, if the more open handed techniques were your main thing, then practice would make them anything but dull tools. I am fairly new to this and I still do a centring meditation, banishing ritual and then have to reach a gnosis state before every magickal act which can be lengthy compared to just firing off a more open handed technique, but I can imagine a time when I might be able to reach a state of mind conducive to working magick in a much shorter time. I have had a bit of apparent success with my own on the fly techniques but i am not at all confident with it yet.
