sell your humanity?

in thinking about story idea's I thinking of the idea of someone giving up part of themselves in order to gain power, I don't care much for the idea of having someone sell their soul, with this in mind I thought maybe the idea of them selling their humanity or in the case I was thinking of half of their humanity would be better. so, does this sound better then the old "sell your soul" bit or what?

I will not abandon your story-mania, Cloud Hex  .
All this selling of parts of yourself sounds a bit severe to me, but hey, it sounds exciting  . Soul-selling I think is a lot more severe than humanity-selling...because you're doomed to eternal hellfire after your soul is take away! But yeah, humanity-selling is a pretty good idea for a story because it makes a lot more sense. And with ultimate power comes loss of humanity? But I really doubt humanity is precious. I think I've spent too long on the computer again - Headache, eyeache...I'll discuss this later...

Isn't this exactly what success in business, politics, etc. is all about? Even working a regular job forces us to abandon aspects of ourselves.
I think you are on to something.

Time. We always sacrifice time. And as things are now, we have only so much time to sacrifice. We therefore sacrifice a bit of our lives for everything we do.
Deciding to spend your life together with another human being could be said to be the biggest sacrifice of all. But then again, the sacrifice is mutual.

How do you think the effect of one selling only half of their should be like in the story, and on that how do you think one should go about it?

Here's a thought...I read recently of a man whose corpus callosum was severed and who, as a result, had one brain hemisphere that believed in god and the other which was atheist.
Perhaps someone could sacrifice part of their brain (and/or brain processing power) in return for some "power" whether material or otherwise. Perhaps a scientist gives his/her emotional centers to an alien intelligence in return for enhanced mathematical/logical ability...with tragic results. It has Lovecraft written all over it..."Forbidden Planet", too.

Lovecraft, eh? how about a rough servitor takes over half the brain/mind of a teenagers brain to escape its master, over time the not only does this change the his/her psyche, but also the the very working of their internal energies.

"Better to burn out than to fade away". Blade Runner-ish.
...Higher metabolism, faster thought processing, keener instincts and perception. - Great awarenes and control of surroundings.
At the next level one reacts before action occurs. Following level one reacts to a threathening layout of a situation. Next level one reacts to intuition and acts correctly without giving it thought.
I'd imagine paranormal perception is next, along with some more subtle paranormal ability to influence. Following this, you might as well want to write about Dungeons and Dragons, as it is quite removed from reality.
You could expect someone to sweat a lot and run a fever, get a bad headache, feel like a zombie and so on as a result of this. One would look really worn and tired quickly, then fall ill and succumb to sickness or insanity.
How topractically go about it, I'm not sure. If all that is needed is a plot device, you could choose anything between a new drug and the classic selling one's soul to the devil. If you want something that sounds plausible and practical, tell me and I'll cook something up.

Sorry, but I've had a rather distracting headache for the better part of the day. I'm not really up to the intellectual challenge right now, but I will hopefully tomorrow.

It just came to me now:
A chemical imbalance brought on by great stress, plus some releasing factor that takes the form of a choice.
I'll edit this post to add some details tomorrow. Now, sleep.
ED:
There should probably not only be the carrot for choosing to go through with the deal, but also some stick for not doing it. This kindof blurs the line between right and wrong and makes for greater suspension of disbelief. - Choose not to go through, and you not only lose the carrot, but get a taste of the stick aswell.
Stick could take the form of some sort of inevitable breakdown, mental or otherwise.
When a person is exposed to stress there really are a lot of changes in their bio-chemistry, but I think it would be more convincing if the stress is short-term and intense.
References to mothers lifting up cars to save their children is a good excuse here. People have heard it before, so they're not unlikely to take the bait. Some research on the matter might come in handy, still.
There's plenty of more stuff beyond this that could be used, but heck, I'm not gonna write this thing for ya. Get creative. :p

It could be a catch 22, where a part of the brain is taken, power is given, but the emotion that the brain part was for, means that the whole drive for power is lost through lack of the emotion one was trying to achieve. make sense?
Its like, want sex with every women, become a eunuch. well, something of a paradox like that.
It would be like like chemotherapy to remove cancer, but the chemo kills you. some sort of poetic irony would go down well in a story. like have you read the short story "The long walk" by Stephen King? in trying to get what you want, you may be beyond enjoying it when you get it. read it Cloud Hex, maybe it will give you the irony mindset you need.

sell your humanity?
I did this with my evoked dybbuk I identify as "William Iron Fist" I lost some of my compassion and political views and obsession with video games it's like a barrier that doesn't let me feel good about that stuff. I do feel empty at times. Though he gives me a sense of purpose and
very powerful ambition. He gives me a VERY strong male dominating presence that. I've always had that but it's increased with Iron Fist. I startle a lot of men and I'm only a girl who's 5 ft four inches. He helps me "kill with a stare" I just need to stare at people and they don't mess with me.
But change of the soul is important. Sometimes sacrifices and chances have to be made.
We have to do that in life anyways and that does change the soul.

well, when you say "sell your humanity for power" you make it sound as though your humanity has value (other than for social comfort among your fellow primates).
Personally I would more look at it as "shedding your humanity in order to evolve" where the humanity is not given up as a bargaining chip, but is discarded gradually through the process of becoming something new. In this context it is not some dark dealing, but a positive motion of personal development. Although, physically, we are all primates regardless of what's going on within. And we're sometimes an enjoyable bunch of primates, and I think there would always be some level of nostalgia associated with that form, and perhaps even once in a while a sense of loss, at least on a more primitive level of our being.
