So I would say a proper occultist is both an Atheist and an Agnostic.
And I would say, all of the above and/or none of the above, plus or minus or perhaps.

I don't know if I'm proper, what is proper?

Maybe I'm just the illegitimate daughter of man. [greensmile]

So, what then is a proper Occultist?

And why are we still dealing in either/or?

Not off topic, but also not deflecting. [greensmile]

Im arguing that the terms atheist and agnostic are too limited. The scope of the occult or even mysticism goes beyond those two combined.

If you are stating Atheist Occultist as being one who does not use a deity or other entity or overlaying force as a source of power or such as that, then I'd be labeled as such. My power source is internal, though i have access to other sources as well if needed. I'd get into it more, but it'd go really off topic there. [crazy]
Personally, I do not worship any gods in my personal life, so I'd be labeled 'agnostic' in that view. ::)

Caerdon, I was like that too but meet with intersting Lady. Now my main work is around entities yet all my life I was absolutly not interested in that Subject. On Path, change is unpredictable yet very nice feelin. [eg]

Very true, change is quite unpredictable, despite the effort put into predicting it!
And I must admit, I'm interested in hearing the story behind the meeting with the interesting Lady ::)

Though I think its a good idea for me to say that, while i do not work with or have a patron deity or entity, I have interacted with some before, as i realise my previous post may have sounded like I've avoided anything to do with them :P . The main thing for me though is that I do not wish to be beholden to any entity, and I probably (definitely) have some skewed views (and a buttload of pride issues) on the relationship between these entities and deities and the power they bestow upon the mage they are working with for their spell work.

i just.. I dunno, something just rebels in me when a spell calls for calling upon some entity for say protection or to enact something when I feel that it should all come from within the magick user without enlisting the aid of outside forces.

Anyways, that seemed to have sparked a whole little thing from me there, sorry for the random mini rant tangent [blush]

The concept of God(s) is, for most people, a lifetime occult mystery. A lot of Western occultists based their works on the premise that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. I am not exactly sure how an Atheist would reconcile with these teachings, or adhere to them at all. I am quite certain an Atheist can find great satisfaction in Chaos Magick where beliefs in a Higher Power, or Reality is merely a tool for instance, but clearly finds him/herself at odd with many other occult systems East and West in theories and practices.

Edit: 'God' has become a loaded term which I try to refrain using. However convenient in usage, the word is more than often used in the context of an Abrahamic definition which is not the concept that everyone has in mind. Exploring Panentheism, Pantheism or Polytheism can really shift one's perspective of the Divine which makes more sense according to one's views of the Universe, science and the occult.
