Possible effects of so many servitors?

Post by Haelos »

I'm back for a short time for my first thread here in a very long while.
I am here to pose a question to you;

What are the possible effects (good or bad) of there being so many human-created servitors with the purpose of a specific or non-specific intent?

We all know that Chaos Magick is "the next big thing" in the little occult world on the Internet, and these days, it seems that most practicing magicians would rather create an entity using a sigil than attempt to cause the change directly by their own power.
I see the benefit; less time needed for the ritual and cast, the entity can act as it feels best, rather than ruthlessly attacking the problem with logic, as man often does, it's a fairly flexible system with near-limitless possibilities....

But, could there be side-effects from these simple casts that we aren't yet aware of? Or, maybe we are aware of them, and choose to act as we do anyway?

In my life so far, I have only had three servitors. Every other spell was cast in a lengthy process using my own metaphysical energy as fuel.
Two of those servitors have been destroyed almost completely, and the other is still in active work.

With so many extra entities running around, basically like single-celled organisms in their nature, what effects could this be having on us the practitioners/creators, the 'mundane' civilization, and the world as whole? It has to be having some type of effect, and we need a way to measure whatever it is.

Other minor questions to consider for this thread;
Is it possible when you create an entity that you're really just losing a piece of yourself to get the job done?
It is possible that another, pre-existing entity jumps into place to do your will? (If so, could it have other motives beyond your will involved?)
Is it possible that other practitioners can take advantage of your servitor and set it against you or against itself?
It is possible to control another persons servitor in general?

Please leave detailed responses. I won't be here a lot to check on updates, so I'd like what I come back to to at least be something worth reading. These are, I feel, important ideas to consider, especially taking into account our increasingly-spiritually-evolving society.
Do you think the implications of lazy Chaos Magicians are good or bad? Is it better or worse to work through an entity beyond yourself.

I've still never even evoked something that wasn't my own creation. You would do wise to take caution in what you think you know to be safe.
I'd rather act leisurely now to be enlightened in the future, than be successful now and enslaved in the future.

You need to remember that people create thoughtforms and larvae on a daily basis, and always have. If you develop a sharp enough Sight, you can even sit in a crowd and watch what kind of things are attached to people, much of it of their own creation. In fact, most natural nasties only show up because the thoughtforms are already there, and are tasty to the natural nasties.

Most of the time these thoughtforms simply fade away and cease to exist when they run out of energy, and the same holds true for all the servitors that people are creating these days. A few will evolve and become natural spirits, and many will die off.

The spirit side is much bigger than the material Earth. There's plenty of room for these new children to run around and grow.

Not losing. If you create a servitor that is unintelligent and not sentient, it's no different than just casting a simple spell. If you make one fully sentient and intelligent, then it's like having a physical child. You give part of yourself to the process, but unless you do something very wrong, you don't really lose any of your soul or psyche.

Occasionally, but rarely. Most natural spirits have better things to do, so it's far more common for people to simply imagine things and slip into delusions than what you are asking. And yes, every sentient entity moves by its own motives. Spirits are people too.
Haelos wrote:Is it possible that other practitioners can take advantage of your servitor and set it against you or against itself?
Yes.
Haelos wrote:It is possible to control another persons servitor in general?
As mentioned above, yes. It takes a particular kind of skill and authority, but you can even take control of natural spirits that are sent against you.

I don't think it's quite right to call Chaotes lazy. They just have a different style, and there have been other cultures who have done similar things. I really don't think there are any social dangers here.

Yes, there certainly seem to be plenty of random "things" cluttering up the astral plane lately. I don't think it's anything new; like Shin said people are generating thoughtforms all the time even without intent, but the recent surge of popularity in tulpamancy/servitor work among novice chaotes has made an impact. That said, I don't think chaos magicians are lazy in general. I just think the ones who are lazy are more likely to leave behind incomplete or broken servitors who outlived their original purpose and are just going around sucking up energy now. And I do think it's a good idea for responsible magicians to "decommission" them when they come across them, if it's within their skill set.
