It’s Aleister Crowley’s Birthday

Post by Seabed »

Born on this day, 141 years ago, his name still trigger deep responses in people. His legacy is anything but one more historical name in a long list of occultists.
My question is a very simple: Do you like him?
My answer is also a very simple: Yes, I do, in spite of his awful behavior :)

No, i don't like him. Aside from having a serious case of spiritual pride, he stole Highest Yoga Tantra secrets and corrupted them. I find that utterly deplorable.

Without Mr. Crowley there would be no Golden Dawn "as we all know it". Without him we may never have even known it, At all! Without him there would possibly be no Wicca, no Stairway to Heaven, no 777, and no Necronomicon. There would certainly be no Thelema, an idea thousands of influential individuals have been influenced by. He worked harder than any occultist I have ever known. He wore his problems like a badge. He embodies Individuality, Individuation, and Know Thyself. I respect and like him a great deal. Happy Birthday 666.

He was a very interesting and influential person, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading one of the better biographies about him ("Perdurabo" - it's a great read, it doesn't try to put Crowley on a pedestal, but it doesn't trash him either, just deals with the facts in an engaging way), but I've never enjoyed any of his own writing (with the exception of Diary of a Drug Fiend and some of his poetry - imo he was a better poet than he was occult author), and I suspect that if I were to somehow encounter the man in person, we wouldn't get along.

i personally think he would blush at this comment. <3

especially because "mountaineer" beats "qabalist" (over analyzing as the Beast himself would).

And every woman is a star.

Break down the bar!

To man I come, the number of
A man my number, Lion of Light;
I am The Beast whose Law is Love.
Love under will, his royal right—
Behold within, and not above,
One star in sight!

That sounds like a wonderful world. I don't know which one of those I would rather eliminate from existence, but if they all disappeared tomorrow it would be a good thing. [wink]

Back in the day, when I used to listen to radio stations. I distinctly remember that song
claiming the number one spot of the 100 greatest Rock Songs of all time. More than once.

Certainly it has lost some "Magick" from being overplayed. But...when the Universe is reset,
and everything becomes new again. We can all hear it again for the very first time.
Or so it will seem.
