Upgrades

Post by Cerber »

Greetings, fellow Humans!

Forum is undergoing some changes and upgrades, over the past few days. To the most part those are related to stuff at the very back-end, and should not be noticeable, but there's possibility some of those might cause issues in cases, so:

- if at any point you find forum loads looking a bit broken in any way, give it few hours, there might some changes in progress, at that very time, and issue may resolve itself shortly,
- if waiting didn't help, try clearing cache on your browser,
- if you waited and cleared cache, but you're still seeing some issues, please post a description and/or screenshot of the issue under this thread,
(if it functional enough for that, otherwise other option to send email to forum admin mailbox, although currently that mailbox is not monitored very regularly, but I'm sure we'll pick it up within a day or two, but some patience might be required for that path).

And let me know if you discover anything on forum broken, or just not working as it used to.

Most updates/upgrades already completed, except for the last few bits left for the coming days and weeks, of the kind which could cause temporary issues, so I just wanted to let everyone know there's some work ongoing, with a slight possibility of minor and temporary technical difficulties.

Yes, that feature looks to be broken atm.
Thanks, I'll try to fix that in couple days.

The edit window's already closed. I was just going to check to make sure I left the video code, I think I did. That way it will just show itself when the problem is fixed.

Thanks Cerber. I'm sure you're looking at tons of forum code written by someone else, good luck!

No edit, but I can see space allotted for videos that aren't showing, so it's there. Me with my lower position in the forum hierarchy might require assistance of the supreme Cerber in some situations.

none of the youtube embeddings seem to be working right now, and atm I can't say for sure if it's due to recent changes on the forum, or due to changes in youtube policies or a combination of those.
youtube bbcode implementation looks to be a bit custom here, not found code for it where I expected it to be, and I haven't found yet where exactly they had it patched in.
for sanity check, I tried to do some tests on a completely fresh new installation of phpbb, latest up to date version, but things refused to work on that too.
so it's looking to be a lot larger jar of pickles than I hoped, but I'll figure it out later this week, hopefully. I have to return to my day job for few days, but I'll be back to this from wednesday or thursday.

So, how's that promotion to Administrator workin' out for ya? At face value it looks like you're in over your head. I did notice a couple of bugs since you've been 'maintaining' the forum, but nothing too spectacular. I'm pretty sure that the issues being observed here have nothing to do with YouTube and are a result of you modifying the forum code.

Analysing and modifying forum code can be very time consuming and if you don't have the required time to dedicate then maybe you should just leave well enough alone.

I have no idea what you are doing; maybe you are only tweaking controls on the front end for all I know. Sounds like you tried reinstalling and that didn't work. I do have some experience in programming, scripting, and HTML et cetera, but I have been out of the game for a while.

If you would like some help, let me know, and when I have some free time, I will look into this phpBB Forum Software and help you troubleshoot if you would like?

I agree, it would have been ideal if it all could have stayed as it was for few more generations, but forum found itself in need of a new home, within days, or alternative might have been "404".
And for new home, I wasn't overly keep to host it on bare metal, because of long list of reasons, so it was migrated to new server, environment, with only few days of prep and tests, and result was nearly fully functional forum, with only few remaining bugs to iron out in the coming weeks and months. But once everything gets polished and packaged neatly, it should be much easier to maintain for all the future caretakers, at least in theory, because they will be able to host forum on a simpler, more "modern" hosting environments with gui control panels, etc and so on, and there will be less of need for expertise in setup and maintenance of linux webserver, mysql and dozen other things in the stack with just terminal window.
So any messing about the code I did so far, was more about getting it run in a new environment, and less about me wanting to mess with it out of pure boredom.
Either case, it'll be all fine in the end.

Well thanks for that, it is very insightful. At first, I thought you were just tweaking the forum as it was for whatever reason.

Back in the late 90s I did a bunch of custom programming, CGI(common gateway interface), and web-based applications for a school management association, and I got paid well for it. One day the customer says he's migrating to a new server; the only problem is that all of the development was done on a Windows based platform where I had coded a bunch of active server pages likely amongst various other Windows only trinkets, and I told him that none of the work that I had done for him is going to work on the new server – it was Linux, PHP, and MySQL. Needless to say, he wasn't very happy about it.

Anyway, at least we got a couple active staff left here. I've been on other forums that were completely abandoned, went defunct for whatever reason, or didn't have any technicians to properly maintain like the last place I was at – it's still hanging in there though with a new mod.

I do know how much of a pain in the ass and time consuming all this can be, so good luck with your new Admin role and maintaining the forum!

P.S. I'm up to my elbows here anyway, so any involvement from me would likely only be marginal unless some other things were made to suffer in my absence.

Some parts of bbcode system might still produce some errors (I'll work the rest of it later), but at least youtube specific code should be functional.

But let me know if anyone still seeing any issues.
