This is a delicate question Lord Drago as it involves controversial ideas such as reincarnation, souls, choice and appointment. What I could tell you would only be a conceptual idea of my understanding because I personally don't have the experience to be able to answer this conclusively. What I mean by this is that I haven't died and born again in a complete way, only in some aspects nor do I remember my existence previous to my birth on this planet.
I've had some past life visions/insights/experiences or whatever you call them but they served mostly to understand my karmic process at that time.
I have a pretty good idea but it's just that. It would be the same as telling you the story of a movie...
Anyway I believe that life cycles into an upwards spiral of consciousness through our various physical incarnations. As we gain insight of our true nature we are naturally led to help others do the same. Where methods and techniques differ depend on what actions we have done and what consequences we should go through.
Also shamanism is basically a cultural concept. A druid is also a shaman, a medicine man is also a shaman (forgive me Native American purists) and so forth... It's all in the cultural context, their missions and paths are similar.
In the end what makes you choose your path and your teacher and your location is your vibrational affinity to all these factors. Ressonance and sympathy for tuning your frequency to different rates. This vibration is your creative composition. We are living orchestras
So to answer your question, I don't believe there is a direct answer. It's such a complexely interwoven series of factors that it only can become simple through the one answer: Love.
When we are conscious of Love, we understand everything and there are no more questions.
