First post here...

Due to the close kinship I feel with them, Heimdallr and Tyr. Both are somewhat obscure compared to, say, Odin and Thor, so an explanation may be in order.

Heimdallr was the guardian and watchman of the Bifrost bridge, and his domains were vigilance and silence. In the guise of Rig, he travelled across Midgard and established the three divisions of men - Thrall (serf, peasant, slave), Karl (freeman, herdsman, churl), and Jarl (noble, earl).

Tyr was the god of swordsmen, justice, nobility, oaths, and war. He is shown with one hand, since he lost it after placing it in the mouth of the Fenris-wolf while the other gods bound the beast. One of the Blots I hosted on Yuletide ended with me chanting the galdr for his rune, and thrusting my hand into the bonfire.

As an Asatru, this thread makes me smile.

I am quite partial to Hel. She's one of my patron goddesses. It's quite fascinating that she's rotting from the waist down. Plus, she wants to get together with Fenris and Jormungand and bring in a Golden Age. Of course, that requires the destruction of the current times, but I think it's time for an overhaul. I've also been interested in hexing, and she's the one to turn to in that regard. On the flip side, she's also good at defending against hexes and curses, which is always nice to have.

Fenrir was the son of Loki, along with Hel, and Jormungandr.
Loki was sworn as a blood-brother by Odin a long time ago (Loki's Flyting), but his parents were Jotun. The mother of Fenrir was Angrbodha, herself a giantess.

So Fenrir is of the Jotun race, rather than Aesir or Vanir. If you consider Ran or Hel to be gods, then Fenrir fits the bill.

Somewhat on topic, it must be hard for the valkyrie to find warriors to bring to Valhalla these days... everyones so "civilized" or rather-"sissyfied".

Aside from Odin, I'd say my favorite gods would be Freyja, Ullr and Holda. I don't remember where I read this but somewhere it was suggested that Ullr's name in Germany was Holler and he was considered husband of Holda.

*coughs* Has to be Thor. He kicks ass.
And maybe Balder, too.
And Balders son (Whom I can't remember the name of XD)
Favourite Goddess has to be Sif.
And perhaps even Freyja.
I wear a small mjolnir around my neck to give me strength.

Yes, by the grace of Odin...but Thor is very likable too. ;)

Yet Thor is more like Conan the Babarian (a warrior king very bucolic and straight forward) and Odin is more like Karl Edward Wagners Kane (a warrior sorcerer+ literate philosopher)...

My choice would hve to be my Goddess Eir, as she and I could be one.

For those who would like to know who she is and what my Goddess does:

It is said that the Goddess Eir lives on Mt. Lyfia where she works on healing mind, body and spirit. Using many magickal and natural techniques, Eir is able to provide healing to those that are in need. She also teaches her knowledge to women who are patient enough to wait and listen to her. Eir uses magickal herbs that she has found from all over the world, but this is not all, for to produce healing, one must invoke healing on all levels. With this in mind, The Goddess Eir will use Aromatherapy, Crystal Therapy, Stone Therapy, Counseling, and Chakra Balancing just to name a few alternative methods. Other methods that she has been known to use for healing are; Flower Essences, Herboloby, Shamanic Retrieval Techniques, and Massage. (2)

The Goddess Eir has several different ways of saying and pronouncing her name. A few of these are: Aer and Iaer. The Worterbuch, page 97 defines Eir's name as being derived from words meaning to honor or worship. The Norse noun, "eir" means graciousness, mildness. Related to it is the verb, eira which means to care for, to help or please.

One of the myths surrounding Eir told by Siegroa's personal revelation tells that; "Eir is an Elder Goddess. She was once in conflict with the male gods, a conflict resolved by the works of Sif, she is now especially championed by Thonar and Hoor. As a Goddess of healing, she cannot take revenge or become in involved in bloodshed. To obtain protection she could not afford Herself, she took refuge with Frigga and her women and lent Frigga her energies in Healing and Wortcunning. She may be called upon when there is need, for she will never stint her aid to any, be thay thrall or thane. Aesir of Overlord, an asks the same of her priestesses. Sigroa says that Eir wishes her priestesses to be chaste to aid the flow of the healing energies, and wants them to abstain from the flesh of animals, milk, alcohol and fruit when they call upon her. Also to be cleansed with smoke and sauna."

The Goddess Eir uses the Runes, Berkana, Laguz, and Uruz to represent her. Green and white are her sacred colors. Her Sacred animals are the Cow, Raven, and The Butterfly. The birch tree is her holy tree. Copper is her mineral.

Impressive, but Thor isn't that attractive. He's got red hair, a big bushy beard and has muscles the size of helium balloons.

órr never seemed to be very powerful in magic, however, he is MUCH more than just a big dumb fighter. The Conan comparison is apt, because órr is a god who is straightforward (not dumb!), honourable, and not prone to treachery.

órr was a god of farmers, and the guardian of mankind.

ðinn is much more complicated - magic, travel, poetry, and violent insanity all fell within his domain. There was a reason why two of his companions were wolves - Vargr, an archaic name for wolf, was the name applied to criminals and outcasts within Norse society.

^ well spoken, there- maybe I was misunderstood due to the cheap (neg.) image Conan has acquired by some films etc. Read the stories by Howard and you'll see that he's pretty cool!

Yeah I like Odin a lot: not only the furor poeticus attracts me to hime but also that hes responsible even when facing certain doom- he sees the inevitable but still carries on, tries to avert it nonetheless he takes nothing for granted, he never stops to question himself- thats why he never stops to learn and that makes him wise- that makes him great...

I think Thor is "buddy" to all men not only farmers but also kings-he always has practical advice and help for life but Odin inspires awe, he in-spires, indeed- all great warriors are at least fair poets and vice versa- incites reverence.
