What do you associate with the elements

Post by Occult Forum Archive »

Original post: K.A. Malik

I like to use planets, which I derive mostly from the Sephiroth in Kabbalah. I, um, scribbled on the Tree a bit, which is a very in-progress project.

Pluto/Kether:
0 Reconciles the previous world. Originates Neptune and Uranus. Nothing, but not quite. The first concept of something rather nothing but no more specific. It is the Earth/Malkuth of the next world up. Quintessence after the elements have recombined into purity.
Neptune/Chokmah: 1 Force, no more specific.
Uranus/Binah:2 Form, no more specific.
Saturn/Daath: 3 Constructive and destructive depending on which direction you are going in. Originates Jupiter and Mars. Reconciles Uranus and Neptune. Black. Ending and beginnings, or the point in a cycle that can be defined as a "renewal point." Restriction by means of choosing/chancing one path instead of another possibility. Sadness by knowing this restriction. Creation by choosing a possibility rather than not existing at all. Wisdom by knowing this. Time. Memory. Choice/chance/could-have-been. Entropy. Quintessence prior to splitting into the elements.
Jupiter/Chesed: 4 Constructive form. Society; government, economy (and money). Systems. A building-onto kind of creation. Earth element.
Mars/Geburah: 5 Restrictive force. Restriction by means of removing parts with force. Severity. Aggression. Fire element.
Sol/Tipareth: 6 Reconciles Mars and Jupiter. Originates Venus and Mercury. Expiation/atonement of people. Ascension. Sacrifice for a purpose. Jesus Christ. Light. Projective. Healing. Priestly magic. Quintessence after the elements have recombined into purity.
Venus/Netzach: 7 Constructive force. Intuition. Subconscious. Instict. Psionics/auric magic. Communication by telepathy or such intuitive understanding. Water element.
Mercury/Hod: 8 Restrictive form. Conscious mind. Intelligence, linguistic and logical. Communication by symbols whether linguistic, artistic, mathematical, body-language, etc. Restriction by defining formless forces. Magic which uses symbols and metaphors instead of direct mental control like psionics, such as ceremonial magic. Air element.
Luna/Yesod: 9 Reconciles Mercury and Venus. Originates Malkuth and is therefore the ultimate origin of the next world. Originates the four elements. Ethereal/Astral plane. Receptive. Reflective. Cycles. Magic in general. The mind in general. Quintessence prior to splitting into the elements.
Something is missing here.
Earth/Malkuth: 10 Ultimate reconciliation of this world. Reconciles the four elements. The final product of this world: Pluto/Kether of the next world. Quintessence after the elements have recombined into purity.

What do you associate with the elements

Post by Occult Forum Archive »

Original post: Necropolis

This is what I believe now.

The Elements
An Overview

The Number of Man is five, the Number of the devil is six, and The Number of The Universe is seven.

The Seven elements are, Matter recognized as the Element of Earth, Gas recognized as Air, Liquid recognized as Water, Fire, Electricity recognized as Spirit, Light and Darkness.
It is known that working with any element for any period of time causes you to take on the attributes and personality of that element.
It is my hope that I can explain why this happens, how this happens, and give an overview of these elements, so that you can use these elements with the most effectiveness.
Why? Why do people become more like the Elements, or gods they invoke? Easily answered, all energies, be they god, element or spirit, have a shape. We see these shapes all the time, and often do not know them for what they really are, but when we call on the energies, from these forms, the attributes that we wish to imbue into spells, or talismans, first flow through us, strengthening only the areas it has power over, slowly changing us into its shape.
How is even simpler, there is a Law of Magick and Life, It is Called the Law of Contagion, it states, â??Two manifestations which have been in contact remain in contactâ??. Which has been said in many different ways such as â??everything leaves its markâ??. The simple truth is that letting go of the power stops only the inflow some of the power that you have already channelled now remains inside you as a part of you.
Now the elemental attributes,
Earth, Creator, and Mother, Relates to the Body, and governs the physical.
â??I believe in what one can see and one can touchâ??, no other statement can fit Earth so well, its powers are based in form and function, which makes it perfect for healing arts. All living things are governed by form and function; Evolution is a part of this. Form best suited for environment; function best suited to carry out its needs. Earth Magick can be used to help or hinder these processes.
â??If it Works, its rightâ??, also a statement of Earth, Practicality is how it effects the mind, it puts past experience into perspective and allows for wisdom and growth.
Meaning also that Earth isnâ??t easily changeable and requires other elements to help it to evolve. This is a negative of Earth, As people get older they become less changeable â??set in their waysâ?? this aspect of the Earth effect on the mind is easily seen, but inhibits the growth of the mind of the person with it, and hinders coping with any change.
Its Colour is Green. Governs Physical Manifestation. It Corresponds to the Loins. Its Tool is The Pentagram. Stones, powders and Percussion instruments attract it. Its Direction is North, Its Time of Day is Mid Night, and Its Season is winter. Its Aspect of The Goddess/God: Crone/Old Man, and Some of the Creatures of Earth are Dwarves, Elves and Forest Nymphs (Dryads). The Star signs associated with it are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.
Air, Connected to the Sun. Is considered to be the opposite of Earth, has power over Creation. To be specific new beginnings, and thought. Fast moving, full of ideas, these are the aspects of Air, As Earth grants Wisdom Air gives Knowledge. A concept, learning, and then creation.
Consider for a moment all the things that are being said around the world at the moment, all instruments played, all noises. Knowledge and Communication, what one knows or does not know, means the death or life of a creation, of the idea or concept? The ability to enhance learning or cloud minds is the power of Air. And a head full of ideas is what is how it affects the mind.
The negative aspect is that ideas will flow freely, leaving no space in your mind for anything else, or sometimes anyone else, to be absent-minded but a genius is the extreme example of this.
It Colour is Yellow; Its Power is over Thought. Corresponds to the Mind. Its Tools are Wand, Staff. Incenses, oils, and woodwind instruments attract it. Its Direction is east, its Time of Day is Dawn (Sun Rise), and its Season is spring. Its Aspect of The Goddess/God: Maiden/Young Man. Some of The Creatures of Air are Zephyrs, Sylphs and Fairies And the Star signs associated with it are Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.
Water, Connected to the Moon has the Powers of emotions and intuition, have you ever wondered why? The reason is all acts of Will, are sourced in emotion, emotion activates your Will, gives ideas meaning and depth. Love something enough, hate something enough, it will activate your Will so that what you want will come to pass. Emotions are the language of the Spirit.
Water itself cleanses and washes away no longer needed emotions, for it also has the power of decay and erosion of self. This is allows you to reflect upon yourself and gives room to grow. Water is known as a Passive Power, because emotion will build up behind any blockages inside you, until it breaks free in full force washing away all things that stop their release.
This is its negative, bottling up emotions, leads to a swamp land inside yourself, slowly feeding upon yourself until there is nothing left to feed on. At which point you are empty and turned on yourself, you become your own enemy and parasite.
Its Colour is Blue its Power is Emotions. It Corresponds to the Heart. Its Tools are the Cauldron, Chalice, and Mirrors. It is Attracted by Water, Solutions and Stringed instruments. Its Direction is west.
Its Time of Day is Dusk (Sun Set), and its Season is autumn. Its Aspect is of The Goddess/God Warrior Queen/Warrior King. Some of The Creatures of Water are Undies, Merfolk, Selkie and Water Nymphs. Star signs associated with it are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.
Fire is the Power of Passion, to want, to need something. And like Water is has the Power to cleanse, burn away the excess, but also to motivate. Uncontrolled Passion can eat you alive and burn away the self, so Fire is known as the Most Dangerous of the Elements. By achieving a new state of being can you transcend the old; Passion drives use to this to push past old boundaries. Allowing for a new place to explore and grow.
But all unknowing this can turn into obsession, driven without brakes you will crash and burn, this is uncontrolled Passion without limit, and here lies the downfall of many a man.
Its Colour is Red Its Power is Motion. It Corresponds to the Lower Stomach. Its Tools are Sword and dagger. Candles, Fire and Brass instruments attract it. Its Direction is south. Its Time of Day is Noon (Mid Day) and its Season is summer. Its Aspect is of The Goddess/God Mother/ Father. Some of The Creatures of Fire are Salamanders, Dragons, Phoenix and Kauri. The Star signs associated with it are Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius
Spirit, I have reason to believe is electricity, because it is electricity is what is one of rhe elements which lie behind of all of Creation. Auras are electromagnetic fields; your body is given life by electricity, and huge amounts of electricity link and binds us together, which is in fact the power of Spirit. It is Spirit that allows us to do magick and have psychic powers. Tapping into those forces that tie everything to everything else.
Now the effect on the mind Empathy: Is an awareness of everything around you, feeling them inside yourself. Empathy is to understand the needs and motivations of the beings around you, which mean love and understanding, without hate.
The Negative of this is that Empathy can rip you apart from the inside if you do not know how to control this. It will hurt you with everyone and everything. And in no time will you be able to retaliate against them without hurting yourself more.
There are no correspondences for Spirit except that is associated with the Guru, Its colour is White, and Its time is all times, all star signs, all seasons. Places are Heaven. The summer lands, Enlightenment. Its Creatures are Angels, Spirits and the like.
Light is one of the Primal Forces also; it is the Light (it has a sound also) and the darkness, which is the DNA Of the Universe. Light is what we are made of first, and its power is many fold. But its main effect is the ability of Charisma to capture people with its light and sound, to outshine other ideas and beliefs. Note Shallowness and seeing only the surface is also a side effect.
The Negative of this is simple self righteousness, if enough people tell you are right then you will believe you are right, and all other ways of being are right in other words Conformity. Being told what is right, and believing it.
Creatures of Light are Jehovah, Life, and Certain other Gods.
Darkness, Brooding, Deep, Introspective. Darkness is the Power of Uncreated Possibility. All things unknown are only unknown because they havenâ??t been realized yet. But as Light is outward, Darkness turns inward. This means that it draws you to access yourself, and your worth. As Light draws people to you, Darkness uses it power to draw you inward to make an informed choice.
Outcast, non conformist, and Loner, these are the easily seen negatives of this, because it separates you from other beings, slowly absorbing, processing, and allowing this process not to be seen.
But the true Negative of Darkness is Fear, fear of all things unknown. Feeling safe with only the things you know because life is full of scary unknowns.
The Creature of Darkness is Death, Chaos, and Fate.
How to use this Information the Best
The best way to use this information is to research this for yourself, like study the Air Star signs, see how they relate to Air, and hw Air affects them, study the science of Water, you can find that there are parallels in Magick and science, get out a piece of paper and write down what comes to your mind when you think of Light/Darkness Do all these things.
Doing this will help you understand the elements and how they will affect your magick, and how to use them to improve your life, and magick. And hopefully, in aiding understanding of the Elements, it will help you to understand yourself.
â??Know thyselfâ??

Original post: december flame

Earth: free, home, unpredictable, gaia, time
(I think time because they both go round in circles.)

water: emotional, cold, artistic (becuause it's either calm or wild.)

Fire: Expanding, desperate, creative, destructive, active, consumer, warm

Air: Breathing, communication, sound, sky

Light: Ordered, meaningful

Void: emptiness, disable, meaningless,

Time: Predictable, stable

I thought I'd put some biological energies in the list since they're raw energies aswell.

Nuclear: poisonous, addictive, damaging

Kinetic: purposeful (can't really think of much for that one)

Mechanical: mundane, obediant

potential: over-contained, impatient, limiting

Well, I live in Australia so I associate the directions differently to those who live in the Northern Hemisphere.

East Quater - Air. I associate this with fey folk. I also astrologically associate it with the planet Mercury and the sign of Gemini. If I need to do any workings to get myself moving or stimulate ideas I usually work here.

North Quarter - Fire. I associate this with Dragons and Salamanders. I also assocate this with the Sun and the sign of Leo. If I want to do anything to help me turn ideas into physical action I would work here.

West Quater - Water. I associate this with Mermaids, also with the Moon and the sign of Scorpio. Being the west, I also associate this is with realm of the dead and place my altar here at Samhain.

South Quarter - Earth. I associate this with Gnomes, also with Venus and the sign of Taurus. If I need to do something that is "earth based" or just simply practical I would work from this quarter.

As for the Akasha, I don't give it an association as such, but it is represented on my altar by a small iron cauldron in the center.

I'm kind of surprised that I haven't found a single reference to the four qualities, of which the four elements are based (in the Western tradition).

"Now, every one of the Elements hath two specificall qualities, the former whereof it retains as proper to it self, in the other, as a mean, it agrees with that which comes next after it. For Fire is hot and dry, the Earth dry and cold, the Water cold and moist, the Aire moist and hot. And so after this manner the Elements, according to two contrary qualities, are contrary one to the other, as Fire to Water, and Earth to Aire."
-- Agrippa, Three Books of Occult Philosphy
http://www.esotericarchives.com/agrippa/agrippa1.htm#chap3

I've visualized this with the Vesica Piscis as such:

Image

I see this model as the embryo of the Tree of Life I use. Qualities are states and elements are processes moving focus between sates.

dry - consciousness->
rigidity/self-determination, fixed/structured - intuitive (Keirsey) - autumn leaves, inflexible stems, stiffening joints

fire - hot/dry
flame, blaze, lightning, sun, sunlight and beaming (Empedocles) - feeling (Jung) - excitement, activity, self-confidence (Lüscher)

hot - force
separation/distillation, subtle/light/rising, centrifugal - feeling/percieving (Keirsey) - summer sun, flourishing individuality, mature vigor

air - moist/hot
sky, firmament, brilliance, ray, eye and cloud (Empedocles) - intuition (Jung) - loosening, change, self-development (Lüscher)

moist - ->matter
fluidity/flexibility/adaption, volative/expansive/spreading - sensory (Keirsey) - spring rains, pliant green shoots, rapid growth

water - cold/moist
rain, sweat, moisture and sea (Empedocles) - thinking (Jung) - relaxation, satisfaction, self-moderation (Lüscher)

cold - form
association/mixing, gross/heavy/falling, centripetal - thinking/judgement (Keirsey) - winter chills, loss of identity, death

earth - dry/cold
land, soil and ground (Empedocles) - sensation (Jung) - solidity, persistance, self-respect (Lüscher)

To understand this system further, I recommend the following links --

Surely for anything to exist, it must be possible for us to see all elements within everything. Take a plant for example, it takes in air through stomata on the leaves, lives in the earth, generates and uses food by a form of combustion using sun energy, and it needs water to accomplish all of the above.

The Norse used a completly different type of correspondence. The primary elements are two in number: 1)Fire 2) Ice, the secondary ones are 3) Water 4) Air, and the further Elemental building blocks are 6) Salt 7) Yeast 8)Venom, and of course the final elemental synthesis Earth. This is explained in Gylfaginning in the Prose Edda.

this is for a book I am writing, the key to elemental psychology. This is not the backbone of the book, but opens up new realms of possibilities. There are some nice original philosophical diagrams. I hope to end the base science of psychology with it, the basest of all science (actually social psychology), show them they can't practice quackery without a witch's liscence. the chakras all tie in to this too. It will be a good book, about 100 pages.
Somehow I think iodine is not associated with phencyclidine

A much deeper question than it first appears. All of the responses are solid and well thought out. As my profile suggests and my intro in the newbee section outlines, all elements are focal points for me. Whether they be traditional or those not yet identified, they do or can provide focus for our energies. Water, Fire, Wind, Etc. can and do provide channels that we can direct or redirect for our visions and acts. I love the input heretofore and am anxious to see more. Thanks for this locus, Lord.

im actually really greatfull this topic is still going, the reason for first creating it was to see how varied pagans assosiations could go and to understand more about people through their choices of association.
coming back and see'ing more and more varied responses is great, i really hope this topic continues to grow.

Water=Life
In the Coffin Texts the deceased says, "and they gave me life just at Isis gave water to Horus," and "it is Isis who will give me water."

From at least the time of the Pyramid Texts and probably long before, Isis was associated with the life-giving waters of the Nile. In this aspect, She is Isis Sothis, the Divine herald of the Inundation and the renewing Lady of Birth and Rebirth. Each year as the star of Isis rose in the sky, so the floodwaters of the Nile rose on Earth. On a practical level, the land was made fertile for another year by this flooding. On a magical level, original Creation was reenacted, for it was out of the watery Chaos that Egypt's first land was known to have emerged.

Pausanias records, "The Egyptians hold the feast for Isis at a time the Nile begins to rise, and it is a saying among many of the natives that what makes the river rise and water their fields is the tears of Isis."

At Her Philae temple, she is called the "rain-cloud that makes green the field when it descends."

From the Pyramid Texts, "Raise yourself, O King! You have your water, you have your inundation, you have your milk which is from the breasts of Mother Isis."

Milk=Magic
It is the first food, the perfect food, a warm and intimate connection between our mothers and ourselves. As Great Divine Mother and a Cow Goddess, Isis is the Egyptian Milk Goddess from a very early period. The Pyramid Texts say to the deceased, "Take the breast of your sister Isis the milk-provider."

Wine=Blood
In a magical papyrus from the second century CE, the "blood of Osiris," clearly wine, is poured into a wine cup, and is to be given to a woman as part of an erotic spell. "Give it, the blood of Osiris, that he gave to Isis to make her feel love in her heart for him night and day at any time, there not being time of deficiency." No doubt the association of Osiris with wine is the reason that one story tells us that Isis became pregnant with Horus by eating grapes. Isis Herself is also given the title of Mistress of Wine and Beer.

The Mistress of Wine is married to the Lord of Wine, and their child is conceived by the consumption of grapes. Isis is the green Goddess of the vine and the purple goddess of the wine.

Fire=Renewal
Fiery Isis is connected with initiation, magic, and healing. In Ploutarchos' rendition of the Isis myth, Isis nurses the child of Queen Astarte during the day, but at night magically sets the child aflame, making him immortal. The Graeco-Egyptian magical papyri suggest an explanation for this fire magic that Isis works on the queen's son. The Charm of the Syrian Woman of Gadara says, "the most majestic Goddess' child (Horus) was set aflame as an initiate." Initiation is here seen as purification by fire; the mortal parts of the initiate are burned away, allowing her or him to more fully understand the ways of the Deities. Some scholars believe that this initiatory fire magic may have had its origins in Egyptian healing magic and what they call the "burning Horus" formula.....Mystery initiates, too, regularly undergo symbolic near-death experiences before being saved the Goddess or God of the Mystery Rite.

Isis is Iset Wosret and the fire-spitting Cobra Goddess. She is the Mistress of Flame Who slays evil and protects us all. And She is the one Who initiates us by fire.

Those are what I usually use in my practice.

Earth, as it relates with Aset, would be shown as her being the ancient Goddess Who is the Place of Being, as the daughter of Earth, or as the Lady of the Land itself.

Isis is always the Ancient Lady of the Living Air, Queen of the Winds, Winged Goddess of the Spirit Revivified. From her we receive our breath and our life.

Sprit is the Aset-Ka. :)
