Depending on how we view what a God is... I don't think they ever left. There are no gaps in the Magickal universe. So if a God where to leave, all would collapse so to speak. If we consider the Annunaki as God's, then that is comparing apples to oranges...ie. physical to metaphysical.

My guess is that the current neopagan revival is helping old astral forms that weren't being employed quite as much in the more exclusively Christian era and returning them to a more wide-spread use. It at least makes some sense when people like Dion Fortune make the assertion that polytheism was our attempts to grab at aspects of reality and reason with them and in doing so we did create conduits of sorts that would do precisely what we wanted them to do (her example in Mystical Qabalah of course was the tribal animist who created a rain deity in the astral to interface with the natural processes and grant them rain when they needed it).
From what Asurendra said about devas it still sounds like there's more going on than just man-made egragores even though they're common. Having such an eclectic mix of autonomous and man-made forces does make the topic a bit confusing just because it's difficult to tell what people mean when they say 'gods'.
