Wicca is a religion found in various countries throughout the world. It was first popularised in 1954 by a retired British civil servant named Gerald Gardner.[1] He claimed that the religion, of which he was an initiate, was a modern survival of an old witchcraft religion, which had existed in secret for hundreds of years, originating in the pre-Christian Paganism of Europe. Wicca is thus sometimes referred to as the Old Religion. The veracity of Gardner's claims cannot be independently proven, and it is thought that Wiccan theology began to be compiled no earlier than the 1920s.[2]
"Satanism" is a term which has been used since the end of the Middle Ages to describe a number of different belief systems. It was first used as a perjorative by the Catholic Church. Later it was adopted by a wide variety of people, sometimes as a form or rebellion, but often as a valid religion. There is little consensus though as to what Satan really is and stands for, much less Satanism.
Pentagram: Christianity
The pentagram was used as a Christian symbol for the five senses,[8] and if the letters S, A, L, V, and S are inscribed in the points, it can be taken to mean a symbol of health (from Latin salus).[citation needed]
Medieval Christians believed it to symbolise the five wounds of Christ. The pentagram was believed to protect against witches and demons.[9]
The pentagram figured in the heavily symbolic Arthurian romances.[9] It appears on the shield of Sir Gawain in the 14th Century poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In the poem the five lines of the star are given multiple meanings: they represent the five senses, five fingers, the five wounds of Christ,[10] the five joys that Mary had of Jesus (the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Resurrection, the Ascension and the Assumption), and the five virtues of knighthood which Gawain hopes to embody: noble generosity, fellowship, purity, courtesy and compassion.
Probably due to misinterpretation of symbols used by ceremonial magicians, it later became associated with Satanism and subsequently rejected by most of Christianity sometime in the twentieth century.[9]
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has traditionally used pentagrams and five-pointed stars in Temple architecture, particularly the Nauvoo Illinois Temple[11] and the Salt Lake Temple. These symbols derived from traditional morning star pentagrams that are no longer commonly used in mainstream Christianity.[12]
Pentagram: Judaism
The pentagram was the official seal of the city of Jerusalem for a time.[9]
Pentagram: Satanism
Satanists use a pentagram with two points up, often inscribed in a double circle, with the head of a goat inside the pentagram. This is referred to as the Sigil of Baphomet. They use it much the same way as the Pythagoreans, as Tartaros means Hell in Christian terminology (the word is used as such in the Bible, referring to the place where the fallen angels are fettered). The Pythagorean Greek letters are most often replaced by the Hebrew letters לויתן forming the name Leviathan. Less esoteric LaVeyan Satanists use it as a sign of rebellion or religious identification, the three downward points symbolising rejection of the holy Trinity.
Pentagram: Neopaganism
Many Neopagans, especially Wiccans, use the pentagram as a symbol of faith similar to the Christian cross or the Jewish Star of David. It is not, however, a universal symbol for Neopaganism, and is rarely used by Reconstructionists. Its religious symbolism is commonly explained by reference to the neo-Pythagorean understanding that the five vertices of the pentagram represent the four elements with the addition of Spirit as the uppermost point. As a representation of the elements, the pentagram is involved in the Wiccan practice of summoning the elemental spirits of the four directions at the beginning of a ritual. The outer circle of the circumscribed pentagram is sometimes interpreted as binding the elements together or bringing them into harmony. The Neopagan pentagram is generally displayed with one point up, partly because of the "inverted" goat's head pentagram's association with Satanism; however, within traditional forms of Wicca a pentagram with two points up is associated with the Second Degree Initiation and in this context has no relation to Satanism.
Because of a perceived association with Satanism and also because of negative societal attitudes towards Neopagan religions and the "occult", many United States schools have sought to prevent students from displaying the pentagram on clothing or jewelry.[13][14][15] In public schools, such actions by administrators have been determined to be in violation of students' First Amendment right to free exercise of religion.
Lets have nothing more of this argument. Satanism stole it, Wicca stole it, Christianity stole it, and Judaism stole it. The Greeks and Babylonians first discovered it, most likely the Babylonians through astronomy, and the Greeks by mathematics.Pentagramswere used symbolically in ancient Greece and Babylonia. The Pentagram has magical associations, and many people who practice neopagan faiths wear jewelry incorporating the symbol. Christians once more commonly used the pentagram to represent the five wounds of Jesus,[1][2] and it also has associations within Freemasonry.
The pentagram has long been associated with the planet Venus, and the worship of the goddess Venus, or her equivalent. It is also associated with the Roman Lucifer, who was Venus as the Morning Star, the bringer of light and knowledge. It is most likely to have originated from the observations of prehistoric astronomers.[citation needed] When viewed from Earth, successive inferior conjunctions of Venus plot a nearly perfect pentagram shape around the zodiac every eight years.

I recall that batch of information being passed through usenet some decade or so ago. a file on Pentagrams and Pentacles and what their history was. it was amusing how similar some of the opinions that went into that hodge-podge looks like a good portion of this thread! :evil:

I do, every day, but due to dress rules, it has to be under my uniform. Here is the funny thing though: We have been instructed to keep any religious symbols under our clothing, but sikhs are allowed to wear their turbans and the moslems are allowed to wear their head gear and prayer tie thinys around their wrists in plain sight. Bowing to reverse discrimination?????

I was given a Pentagram at my hand fasting and I do not take it off. It matters very little whether it is beneath my shirt or over it. I tell others to make no mistake, I am in no way a Christian. Perhaps I am a little antagonistic in my approach, and for that I am truly regretful, but on more than one occasion I have been accosted verbally and on one occasion physically for my unique belief structures by Christians even when I did call myself one.
I do not take it off and if I am asked what it is, I decide whether or not to tell them. A typical response I have used with Christians is that the Church at one time used it to represent the Five Wounds of Christ and leave it at that.

The only religious symbol I ever work with is the sigil of 'me'... which i have not been able to find in jewelry stores obviously. I'm thinking of having a necklace custom made though. and then i'll wear it everywhere. and i'll tell the muggles its an ancient talisman against nosey questions.

despite the fact that our town has more churches than houses and the people in those houses are quite in your face about their religion, I often wear my pentacle necklace and or ring. strangely its been my son who asks about them the most. in a larger town I would be much more confrontational about my beliefs, but here I much prefer to just blend into the shadows and never talk to anyone around here unless its absolutely necessary.

It's kind of at a funny angle in the picture, but it is on the back of my neck. The necklace I have on is my Thor's hammer. Both are visibile in public, both get a lot of questions. I usually try to avoid having to explain myself, out of exhaustion of having done it so many times before... but I'll humor them and just say, Thor for strength and Satan cuz he's a badass... enough said. The more frequent questions I get are about all of the piercings in my face: "Did that hurt?" they ask. I smile: "What, when I fell from heaven?"

it wears two pentagram rings and hand-chains every day no matter where it goes. and a black oath-band of course. everyone at work knows about it anyway.... when we go to the pub they call it devil worshiper & stuff (in a friendly way) and sometimes ask it stuff about whats its believings. one co-worker asked why it wore the hand chains and was told "i am commanded to" and she wanted to try them on, so it let her. (tactile contagion ... yummy ... )
it needs a new inverse pentacle for around the neck though, it thinks.
it had a lovely seal of Solomon it wore (to seal 'em in, not keep 'em out, natch) but no longer has this. was lost during the last major shard-shift this past year. damn sleeper in the citadel she'll get hers..........

I have a nice pentagram necklace,which I constantly felt the need to wear.In the end I got a pentagram tattoo on my left arm as a show of loyalty and to exalt the name of Satan.I feel comforted knowing I am "marked by Satan " so to speak.I feel all true Satanists should recieve a permanent "mark of Satan" of some sort,whether hidden or not,as a sign of loyalty.Satan will know you got the tattoo!!

i don't see any reason why i wouldn't wear it... it is part of what i believe in, therefore part of who i am. to not wear it would mean hiding or being embarassed to show what is dear, and important to me. i am proud to wear my pentacle...
