STARTER NOTE TO ANY MODS: I have used advanced search and yet I still did not find what I wanted, if you can (because you are better at me than this :)) then please let me know and lock this topic

Me and my other occult friends have heard about "The Book Of The Dead" and all we know is it contains some sort of secrets and is Egyptian, I was wondering can anyone fill me in on what this is, and although I have heard it is EXTREMELY hard to obtain a copy, does anyone know where a copy of this text is??? (Providing it exists) any information would be extremely helpful

Thanks
Hellbreather

I would assume you mean the Book of Going Forth By Day? (considering the Egyptians didn't know it as the Book of the Dead...). It contains spells to send a person safely into the Underworld, basically. I haven't actually read it... But I did once obtain a copy from my local library. ^^ I was too busy with school to read it, though I hope to actually buy a copy sometime.

I couldn't find a post concerning just this. Lot's of little tidbits here and there, but not this.

HOWEVER, there is a topic here in Ancient Magic about a particular spell from the book. It was started by Caradoc a while ago. You might want to check that out. It may have some ideas on where to find the book. Sorry for not posting the link, but I forgot to copy it over and, honestly, I'm being lazy. LOL

Here is a version that I flipped through while I was at an exhibit recently. It's much better than the Budge copy I have. The art is in color, clear, and looks complete. http://www.bowers.org/gallerystore/view_product.aspx?categoryID=12&productID=423&subID=41

I got a copy at a Museum a few years back. They are VERY easy to get ahold of so there's nothing really secret about it's information. Yes it is Egyptian and it details what you have to do to get into the afterlife and such. There's lots of useful information in it. I recomend getting a paper copy but the e-books are just as good if you like them (I have trouble reading them because I'm dyslexic and sometimes the computer screen messes with me.)

There are many copies (and different versions) of the Book of the Dead available in bookstores and on the net. The Egyptians knew it as the Book of Coming Forth By Day.
I have a beautifully illustrated version of it which is published by Cassell & Co.
I suggest you check with your local bookstore or check out some of the versions available on amazon.com

ah
the book fo the dead, or coming forth as the day, well yes as the others have said its easy to get hold of, i have read it and i am using it as part of university research on egyptian magic and morality. one of the better versions of the book is the papyrus of ani a scribe of the 19th dynasty, budge's copy uses that one and he supplimemts other pasages from other versions. his translation is outdated so get the version by faulkner edited by carol andrews. its not secret information, not like it used to be :)
ah the good old days :)
