Hi All,

From about a year to date, very often when I meditate, my body starts moving by itself, as if I was in a rocking chair. Perhaps the movement could be compared to what happens to a person with autism.

Does anyone have an idea of why this could be happening?

Thank You!

Ilarus

Is the movement surely physical, or could it be merely the illusion of movement?

I know some Buddhist monks will use this technique of rocking back and forth. I suggest you just let it happen.

I remember I used to have the problem of my eyes wanting to open when I meditated. So someone here told me to just let them open. Well I found out that my problem was simply trying to hard to keep my mind clear.

In you case though I don't think it's trying to hard. I think it just is happening natural. I'd let it just happen and see what happens.

Sometimes I have small muscle spasms.. not sure if it's what your talking about though. My biggest problem is swallowing during meditation. I always have throat issues though, issues with my throat chakra, swallowing, even several cuts and physical ailments.. which is probably why I have yet to astral project. Damn im horribly off topic now. Are you sitting up while meditating because if your body starts to fall backward your natural reaction is going to be to move forward.

What are you sitting on when you meditate?

Have you ever had someone insure that you are keeping proper spinal alignment when you are practicing?

Ilarus ,

I have the same problem. With me, it is not so much a shake or twitch as much as a controlled procession; like my body just has to move. It's very rhythmical. Glad someone else is having this problem!...I always just thought it was some artifact of my hyperactivity. I notice it most in the shower, with my torso rocking in a circular motion like a top. All this without any dance music.

So, to solving your problem. Let's minimize any simple things first. Have you limited your stimulant intake before meditating? (Caffeine, nicotine, amphetamines) Are you taking other drugs that might cause restlessness? (Steroids, decongestants, some types of antidepressants)

Personally, I addressed all the previous and still have the problem. I attribute my motions to my innate restlessness, which I am still working with.

Best of luck!

Maybe this can be attributed to the tendancy of the mind to fluctuate between a meditative state and an aware one. I would not worry about it, I have found the gentle rocking I do when meditating sometimes actually helps me maintain the mindstate.

This is a natural occurrence that will develop in meditation. It is called kriya or kriyavati. It is a sign of psychophysical and perhaps energetic and spiritual catharsis. It is associated with Kundalini/Tantric type meditation practices in Hinduism and Buddhism. You can either use concentration to suppress it and consolidate the energy (which some systems recommend) or you can let it happen on its own or else even let it happen AS meditation. Here is an edited cut and paste from an essay I recently posted on my blogs and my Web site:

About Kriyavati, Trance, Seizure, and Pseudoseizure

Happens to me to, I still haven't worked out whether I'm actually moving or just sensing energy moving about or perhaps my astral body loosening from my physical. Its strange because I rock slightly, but never feel as if I'm going to fall over...my balance is still perfect and I seem to move in very definite parameters. Weird innit?

I meditate on the toilet daily, my bowels move- sometimes painfully- sometimes more easy but most are in-between. Overall something moves and I must be in the right place because no-one complains.

The rocking motion doesn't happen to me it's more of a shaking and if you have seen in meditation or even sometimes in ritual work you would think I was havening a seizure.
If you are also doing some cleansing work on your self you will be bringing more energy and light into your body and if this bothers you you can ask the powers that be to be easy on your system
All in all it has to do with the microseism aligning with macrocosms the aligning the energies so that the appropriate work can be done
It is the same thing you see when religious people are say at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem

Again [Big sigh], if you regularly meditate for long enough during your life or become involved in other types of practices that affect neurochemistry and "energy," (like shamanic practices, other kinds of yogic practices, martial art practices--especially Chi Kung--and Pentecostal-type Christianity) you may experience spontaneous movement during the practices. And these movements can be seizure-like. It is common and reflects a new process going on in you and how energy moves in your body and mind. Some people (myself included) meditate like that as a practice. It is very common in esoteric Tantric forms of Yoga, Hinduism, and Buddhism. It can become very dynamic and even violent at the beginning. Over time, it mostly plays itself out and you become steady again.

:drop: to the bowel movement banter.

It also has to do with opening up of the energy centers chakras a lot of people think we only have the seven main chakras in the body.
In the foot alone there are hundreds of energy centers and when they begin to open the body begins to vibrate at a higher speed then we are used and the longer you practice the more you will go through these vibrations shakes tremors

I wish Iâ??d found this thread earlier, Iâ??ve been struggling with exactly the same phenomenonâ??electrical twitching during some forms of meditation. While attempting healing on someone I produced something similar to a static spark, and though Iâ??ve been unable to duplicate it, it seems likely that this is a build up of bio-electric energy.

Iâ??ve found that during simple gnostic meditation, itâ??s only a minor problem, but if I visualize a sigil and there isnâ??t enough of a link with the subject (for example, a general healing sigil with no built-in subject), or I visualize the sigil but am unable to reach a gnostic state, it becomes progressively worse. In normal, properly performed sigil casting it occurs but is largely swallowed up by the disorienting effects of gnosis.

This leads me to think that perhaps itâ??s the result of gathering or generating energy but not properly controlling or using it.

Certainly backfired energy does cause problems in the body. But twitching or painful sensations aren't always caused by misused energy. Sometimes it is just a symptom of removing energetic blocks.

Exactly.

Also, DragonLady, when you are doing healing work on someone else (or vice versa) depending on the person, you will feel electrical sensations flicking through the body and not just in the hands and some can be very intense. The other person will feel this as well. At some point, you may want to take caution because if this energy is active and not well controlled in you, you can spark it in another person (who may not be prepared) and then that person may get weird effects. I once had a wingnut friend who I practiced yoga with who initially got spaced out from working with me, but he kept coming back for more thinking that eventually he was going to get "shaktipat." Alternately, you can become affected by their energy and moods. Also wannabe energy healers can mess with you. I once was in a situation in which I received a massage from an acquaintance who instead of working on a seized set of muscles, decided to show off what a great energy worker she was. She kept working at the top of my head. It was groovy and interesting while it was happening--although I didn't like the idea--but when I went home, I was in the worst mood and found myself crying bitterly for quite a long time. Because of this and other experiences, I rarely do energy work now and I do not receive it although I am going to be embarking on facilitating "gong bath" meditation work in the fall with a local pagan group.

Also you mention getting difficult electrical and movement sensations when you are having trouble approaching gnosis for sigilization or when the sigil is not directed to a target (the target in that case, is actullay YOU--and so it is perfectly understandable that you should experience "kriya" because the energy is trying to shift to accomodate your intention.) Consider that the movement or sensation itself IS the gnostic state--or at least a component of it. Put aside what your notion of the gnostic state for CM is and relax into the sensation or experience that arises in you in that moment and see what happens.

This is supposed to happen and it's good that you noticed your body was moving without you telling it to. Keep practicing so you can assert your Will over your Body and become a better person. The body shaking is also the same as not being able to stop thoughts in the mind. Mastering Meditation is a lifelong task for most. You must control the body in breath, steadiness, and thought. This is the practice od Pranayana, Asana, and Samadhi and above.

I also noticed some similarities between wandering thoughts and nervous twitches.
