Hi I was wondering if anyone knows of a crystal that changes in the presence of electromagnetic fields or radiation? I could well imagine there must be some element that changes in the presence of radiation (short of a geiger counter). Any ideas? Thanks!

Hope this is helpful.

I was thinking Quartzes, these are used in electrical items/electronics.I googled 'electromagnetism and crystals' and got a tone of results. The below is very 'sciency' lol,but there are lots of other sites too, with a more metaphysical context,as well, the second link is more like that.

I recommend you google this and chec kout the varieties of info provided, you might find what you're looking for before I can,lol again.

Thank you that is indeed helpful. The first article seems to be about changing the resonant frequency of the crystal for which I reckon a lab setup would be required, but the metaphysical site described some with absorbent properties which are good. Maybe I was being a little optimistic hoping for a substance that visibly changed when subjected to radiation or electromagnetism! :)

Amber, Jet, black tourmaline, some opals and I think one other one are electrostatic, they will build up an electrical charge if you rub with with a cloth. Quartz will darken if you shoot enough radiation at it, this is how they make the commercially created smokey quartz. Most types of quartz are also piezoelectric, meaning they will spark with a charge if you apply physical/mechanical pressure to them, such as putting them in a vice. Obviously magnetite has some affect on radiation fields. Tourmaline is also known to deflect radiation pretty well. Hope that helps
