Hey all, the title says it all. I've had several paranormal experiences and I've practiced a few things here and there but in the grand scheme of things I'm a newbie. I figured since I happened upon this place while chasing an impossible dream, I'd go ahead and make myself known. I'm also kinda hoping to meet like-minded individuals who won't ridicule me for my 'strange' beliefs. Sooooo.... hi!

After perusing the forum a bit, I noticed mention of servitors and found the thought of creating one absolutely fascinating. I'm debating getting David Cunningham's Creating Magickal Entities, but the first review I saw on it mentions that its not for beginners. I know this probably sounds silly, but what do I need to do to start off in this path?

Correct, it's not for beginners. It's advanced working and simply will not be of much use for you. You might still read it for the theory, but attempting anything already would be, in my view, a waste of time (and energy).

As for what you need to do, well, delve yourself into magick. You have to find your own path. Read plenty of books and put some things into practice. Develop yourself diligently. If you have any specific doubts, feel free to ask.

Thoughtforms and servitors are complicated things, a thoughtform being stuck to your energy (a bit like hallucination) and a servitor able to detach. I actually created 20+ thoughtforms once thinking they were my dead heros. Thoughtforms don't require a ritual like servitors.. and are useless. They just crowd your head.

Angels are better. Less messy, more mature, faster, won't make you go nuts... at least that's my opinion.

Also I find with angels you feel more of a duty to act in order to make the magick work whereas I see with sigil magick (servitor) it's more like "fire and forget... then wait a while".

hah, that's an interesting concept on it. My curiosity was piqued at the notion of creating a loyal, but fairly independent spirit that could act on my orders or autonomously within certain perimeters. Something that could act as a guardian, an aid, or even a focus to work through. I'll admit though, I've been too busy with work and such to be able to even devote time to meditation, let alone learning any arcane arts. I'm hoping to have more of an opportunity in the coming weeks though.

I thought you might say this. Franz Bardon never recommended to keep servitors / elementals / elementaries past a certain pre-chosen date (Book: Initiation into Hermetics)... but I think people on this forum and Thelemites do this. It's like having a child... eventually it grows up and has to leave. If you try to keep it then it'll start draining too much energy (I'll probably get in trouble for saying this as some people don't go by Franz Bardon). Guardian angels on the other hand are here to stay for our lives.

Now, when you say angel, you're not referring to a celestial being with a predetermined sense of morality which would only aid me as long as I conformed to its host deity's whims I.E. angels in heaven, serving God eternal, I'm assuming. I'm not without my thoughts or concerns about the hereafter and whether or not there is, in fact a God, but I would think something regarded as an angel would not be as morally ambiguous as I'd like. Of course, I could be ignorant too, thats always possible :p

If you make a servitor and keep on feeding it for an indefinite period of time, giving it an ambiguous mission like "just do what I want when I want it" you will begin to loose your energy and your sanity. Even if you just tell it to go free and destroy the sigil or object it's bound to, it will have too much power and stick around.

You can't have it all you know. Read this thread http://www.occultforum.org/forum/viewto ... =2&t=32356 and keep in mind that while some of that stuff was real, most of it ended in insanity. Oh and the title of the thread is "are these servitors?". The answer is I don't know and it demonstrates just how ambiguous this stuff can get when you work with unknowns.
