Altars

I thought this might be a good thread and a good place for it. Would anyone be willing to describe or post pictures of their altar to give example both to each other but also "beginners" who will find themselves in this part of the forum? It'll give ideas of how to set it up, really point out the subjectivity of it all, the mixing and matching, I think it'd be good. You don't have to explain the symbolism, as I always say; one's own system is personal and should be kept rather private.

I will post a picture of mine if I can figure out how...

I need a decent camera. My old one broke.

My altar gets very untidy,as you can probably tell from this, lol.

You can link a photo using the image tags:( Image) but it must be loaded onto a site online to do so.

I'm not sure about other methods as I am used to doing it this way .I'll need to check up on this. [thumbup]

[I appear to have a jammy keyboard also,sigh...grandboy gets everywhere.Excuse any missing letters.I newd to clean it.]

I think the pictures people post will say a lot!

This is my Kamidana. The Japanese and the Hopi have similar concepts of the more Terrestrial Devas, called 'Kami' & 'Kachinas' respectively. This altar is to honor these forces. It also honors the dragons. The flag in the background is that of the House of Ivar, from which I am descended on my mother's side.

This is my Shiva Lingam during an offering to Lord Shiva.

Apologies for the poor quality, taken with a horrible phone and needed to mess with the brightness.

I'm the odd ball here! I feel such pressure to conform and bow to the Dark Lord! Oh wait, my God has a Left-Hand side; Aghora, Bhairava, Rudra, Kali maa, etc.

I like to harvest and dry my own herbs too and I lay them on my altar to do so.

It's a safe place to put things,as it's out of reach of the wee ones, lol. [thumbup]

Am I correct in assuming the other altars posted here are actually used for rituals, ceremonies, etc? Mine is rather a jumble, needs some maitnence, but it's more of a psychological altar.

My main altar is my rescued old sideboard which I bought for pennies from a junk shop and renovated myself,it's functional furniture and sacred space and display/storage space too.
It's oak with cast iron handles on the drawers/cupboards and applied cut work and carvings. It's from the Arts and Crafts period, but it had been neglected in a drafty rectory and used to store hymn books,it was coated in thick sludgy matt brown varnish all over when I got it.

All my altars mix their metaphors and uses, lol, but seriously.

I have many cool ritual and/or decorative items I've collected on my travels and adventures over the years.I'm a bit of a magpie at heart and I like a little theatricality from time to time, purely because it pleases me. [grin]

Life is a ritual & a ceremony....

My home is my altar. I have come to stage in my life that my surroundings in my personal space, are parts of me. If you are invited in, & it makes you feel uncomfortable, than please feel free to leave.... [greensmile]

Try making an account on like photobucket, upload the pic, then copy from there and paste here. That worked for me.
