Ancestral Magic

What kind of magical workings can ancestor spirits help a practitioner with? I know they can heal and protect but what else can they do?
They are willing to teach and they are willing to guide if asked, but not if forced. Will power alone won't make them teach you.
As I am working at the moment with different trance inductions and states of trance I learned shaking trance while inviting my known and unknown ancestors--> possession (book recommendation).
There certainly are other ways as well, many cultures take the ancestors as teachers, the Zar do, Suomi did, ancient greeks (at least according to mythology) did. Mythology is full of asking the dead for help or advice, often also by offering something before or in return.
That was a very short example, generalization is difficult to make as working with ancestors is very dependend on the cultural paradigm you work in.
Japanese tradition treats the dead completly different then germanic tripes or the neandertal man did. Chose what suits you best, but research before and look on what points of view exist about that matter.
