Every now and again I see some story about a haunted object, usually books, photos or paintings.

SO, How would you do to cleanse it?

Unless there's an actual entity bound to it, objects are usually easy to cleanse. Ritualistically washing it with cold water, burying it over night, and leaving it out in the sunlight for a while are common methods for common little cleansing problems.

Some things are a bit more complex, of course, and not every haunting is necessarily a bad one.

Usually, if you hold the object up and use the herb in the correct way (the ritual intent, and all that). I've used Frankincense & Myrrh incense to magically cleanse and "anoint" objects before I use them ritually, as well as to consecrate my working space.

Though I've also done those things with internal energy, as well as with intent alone. It just depends on the circumstances.

Washing with some cold water, sometimes salt water (people always feel good by using salt, don't know why though). That method is not very useful for electronics, keept that in mind!
Then of course before doing that I "create" a fitting ritual space, LBPR for example.

I also like to use fire as a cleansing element, incense in addition and a lot of candles. And some imagination...

I'd bury it at sunset in the most natural environment you can find, dig it up at dawn, let it soak in water for a few minutes, wash it off under running water (preferably a natural source, a small creek or something similar), then leave it to sit and dry off in the sunlight until the sun sets again.

I've never heard about burying an object before to cleanse it. What tradition does that come from???

It's an elemental cleansing. You can use salt, smoke (smudge), sunlight, moon light, moon phases, water, flowing water, rain, breath, etc.

If it's something new and you really want to neutralize any energies in it I strongly suggest using a cleansing method for each - earth, air, water and fire. Some people also include Spirit as an element. If you do you could also add prayer.

The Earth element is receptive in nature, as is Water, meaning both will draw out whatever negative force or energy is contained within the object, the sunlight will then serve to both dry the object physically, rebalance it energetically (ie. provide a counterbalance to any leftover excessive magnetic/yin effect from the exposure to Earth and Water) and provide it's own cleansing, purifying force.
