I can attempt to describe what I believe; mind you, I won't claim to be an expert, but I've had several years of experience observing these "planes" as they are so often labeled, and specifically how I interact with them when asleep.
What I have found through extensive meditation and lucid dreaming is that the answer is yes, we do engage in spiritual work when asleep, whether or not we ever become aware of it. However, as anyone who has closely analyzed their own dreams would know, many of these experiences (that may seem entirely coherent while they are happening) ultimately translate into arbitrary and sometimes ineffable nonsense on this "plane." Not to sound overly "Deepak Chopra," but it appears that this can only (at least thus far) be understood through one's own meditative practices.

I am not sure, personally, as I have not had too much evidence of this fall into my own possession. However, from my vague, somewhat ignorant understanding of the occult, our actions on any one plane will resound through every other plane, regardless of where the original cause comes from (elaborated upon in Israel Regardie's
The Tree of Life). Following that logic, your wakeful, physical actions would always correlate with higher spiritual events. Most of this is purely theoretical, of course.
