numerology and the number 9

Hey all,

Not sure if this is the proper place for this, but here goes. My life is ruled by the number 9 in a few ways. I was born on December 9, which makes my Zodiac sign, Sagittarius, the 9th house, my life path number in numerology is 9, and the day of my birthday is ruled by the number 9. Another thing which may just be coincidental, but still funny considering my question - I work on the 9th floor at the hospital I work in. I've read up a bit on the number 9, but I was just surprised how often 9 comes up in my life, especially when I started spiritually awakening and learning about astrology. With all that said, I wanted to hear any thoughts about the significance of this, if any. I'm always searching for truths and constantly learning. I'd love to hear different opinions and views. Thanks!

This is probably the closest of the specific forum boards. I considered moving it to 'Reason and unreason', but you're approaching it from more of a spiritual perspective, so Spirituality is more accurate. [thumbup]

Have you ever studied Greek Isopsephy? A study of Isopsephy may prove interesting, if you wish to look into a non-Gematric system of Numerology. Abjad Notation is also fascinating, especially in relation to its use in ciphers. In Chinese, 9 (九 kɐ̌u) means 'long in time', (久 'kɐ̌u') 'enough', (夠 'kɐ̄u') or a slang/vulgar word derived from dog. This is drawn as 狗 'kɐ̌u' in Cantonese. '99' means 'Eternity'. Numerology also has strong links to Alchemy, but I'll leave it to you to look into those links if that is something that interests you. Did you know that the Periodic Table originated from Numerology? Dirac's large number hypothesis (LNH), which states that the strength of gravity, as represented by the gravitational constant, is inversely proportional to the age of the universe was used to develop James G. Gibsons 'Quantum Theory of Gravity'. Although Quantum Gravity (QG) goes against Einstein's general theory of relativity, assigning gravitational force to quantum field theory being problematic, this is then reconciled through String Theory.

I've provided a link to Leonardo of Pisa's (aka Fibonacci) Liber Abaci in PDF form below.

Liber Abaci isnt Numerology in a magickal sense, but it can provide some interesting insights into the development of numbers, and the Hindu-Arabic system we use today.

Some more information concerning the number nine.

Chinese culture

* Nine (九 pinyin jiǔ) is considered a good number in Chinese culture because it sounds the same as the word "longlasting" (久 pinyin jiǔ).
* Nine is strongly associated with the Chinese dragon, a symbol of magic and power. There are nine forms of the dragon, it is described in terms of nine attributes, and it has nine children. It has 117 scales - 81 yang (masculine, heavenly) and 36 yin (feminine, earthly). All three numbers are multiples of 9 (9×13=117, 9×9=81, 9×4=36)[1] as well as having the same digital root of 9.
* The dragon often symbolizes the Emperor, and the number nine can be found in many ornaments in the Forbidden City.
* The circular altar platform (Earthly Mount) of the Temple of Heaven has one circular marble plate in the center, surrounded by a ring of nine plates, then by a ring of 18 plates, and so on, for a total of nine rings, with the outermost having 81=9×9 plates.
* The name of the area called Kowloon in Hong Kong literally means: nine dragons.
* The nine-dotted line (Chinese: 南海九段线; pinyin: nánhǎi jiǔduàn xiàn; literally: "Nine-segment line of the South China Sea") delimits certain island claims by China in the South China Sea.
* The nine-rank system was a civil service nomination system used during certain Chinese dynasties.

Ancient Egyptian

* The nine bows is a term used in Ancient Egypt to represent the traditional enemies of Egypt
* The Ennead is a group of 9 Egyptian deities, who, in the some versions of the Osiris myth, judged whether Horus or Set should inherit Egypt

European culture

* The Nine Worthies are nine historical, or semi-legendary figures who, in the Middle Ages, were believed to personify the ideals of chivalry

Greek mythology

* The nine Muses in Greek mythology are Calliope (epic poetry), Clio (history), Erato (erotic poetry), Euterpe (lyric poetry), Melpomene (tragedy), Polyhymnia (song), Terpsichore (dance), Thalia (comedy), and Urania (astronomy).
* It takes nine days (for an anvil) to fall from heaven to earth, and nine more to fall from earth to Tartarus—a place of torment in the underworld.
* Leto labored for nine nights and nine days for Apollo, according to the Homeric Hymn to Delian Apollo.

Japanese culture

* The Japanese consider nine to be unlucky because in Japanese the word for nine sounds similar to the word for "pain" or "distress" (苦, kyū)

Nine and multiples of nine, especially 18, 108, and 1008 are holy numbers in Hindu mythology.

I know that mantras are chanted 108 times. In terms of my life purpose or whatever, I wonder why is 9 so prevalent. Gratitude for your reply!

This actually reminds me of when I read tarot and Lenormand oracle. My go to spread is usually the 3x3 spread [smile]

Just to throw in an extra, try The Ennead chapter of Westcott's book, Numbers, Their Occult Power and Mystic Virtues. It's rooted mostly in Pythagorean Numerology, which is usually swept under the rug in favor of Jewish Gematria.

lol I suppose. I figured that was something like the fact that the unit I work on is the 9th floor, just a coincidence.

thank you for your reply! I read that chapter and it is indeed interesting. Your point on Pythagorean numerology reminded me of a book I read called "Numerology and the Divine Triangle." Good read if anyone is interested.

Another aspect that I learned today had to do with my birth card in terms of playing cards and cartomancy. I've been divining with a regular deck of cards for a while, but just bought a book called "Cards of Your Destiny" by Robert Lee Camp. It is believed that the 52 playing cards plus the joker represent the 52 weeks of the year, with the joker evening it out to 365 days. The four suits represent the four seasons and the four elements. Anyway, the book's system breaks it down so each person has a birth card and personality card based on their birthday. Mine just so happens to be the 9 of Clubs (i call it puffy feet :P). Just found it interesting to see another 9.

So my question is, what do you guys think is the significance of all the 9s? I know I won't know for sure, but just curious, with all these beliefs, what can it mean? Am I at the end of my reincarnation cycle, if you believe in that type of thing? I'm still confused lol. Thanks for everyone who has taken the time to reply
