I really am having trouble astral projecting/traveling, can anyone tell me an alternate way of doing so?
I've tried the whole laying down and tricking my body into thinking its asleep, but it does not work right for me.
Any ideas?

Try harder....
Practice meditation.

^ Pretty much.
Start by establishing a regular meditation practice. Don't try projecting, just focus on the meditation for a while. Some kind of energetic work would go a long way to helping to (Robert Bruce's New Energy Ways would be a good start for this, since he wrote it for people who want to astral project in mind).
Once you've been meditating for a minimum of 30 minutes a day for 6 months or so and have a decent feel for your energy body, then take another crack at it (although I feel obliged to warn you that astral projection is not without it's dangers, and was traditionally considered a technique only suitable for advanced students who had the spiritual tools and contacts to protect themselves, it is not the carefree gallivant around the spirit world that some people like to portray it as).
Where are you getting the technique you're using to try and astral project?

That technique isn't about tricking your body into thinking it's asleep, but being on the edge of falling asleep and then "stepping" out of your body. Based on my experience, as well as the experience of others I've talked to, it's not about making a facade of falling asleep but the actual act of being on the verge and keeping enough of your consciousness aware enough to make the mental choice of pull yourself out of your body as your body enters the sleep cycle. Danger of that though is that sometimes you end up trying to do so too late and you fall asleep, but it gives you a chance to lucid dream if that happens... so win?
Anyways, Rin pretty much has said what I would have for getting to know and work with your energetic/etherical body, however you should keep in mind that the timeframe he gave isn't a set one. It can take less time to acquire proper sense and skills to work with and separate your sense of your etherical body from your physical (not literally separating but being able to tell one from the other and work with it). However it can also take more time as well, depending on the person. It's also the "safer" option, a less sink or swim situation. I again agree with Rin's giving of caution for the dangers.
