pendulum
I was talking with my bf this evening, and I was experimenting with my pendulum. He would ask questions only he would know the answer to, and I'd try to answer them with my pendulum. The thing is, almost all of the answers given by the pendulum were wrong! I am wondering if perhaps the distance of the person has something to do with this. He is about 14 miles away. What do you think?

I don't think distance has anything to do with it.
Pendulums can be funny things. This one is giving you answers even through they're wrong. So, a pendulum does work with you. It may be that this specific one doesn't align well with you. It may just be that you need to try a different one.
Others have said that they have specific pendulums for different type of questions and situations. Some have said that certain pendulums never give the right answer.
What I find interesting here is that all the answers were wrong. Are you sure that you were reading it correctly? Did you go through the exercise of asking it what is yes and what is no before you began? Did you tell the pendulum which should be which? Did you just assume that a certain direction meant a certain thing?
I don't work with pendulums. It's just not a tool I work well with. When I pick one up it just spins and spins and won't tell me jack.

I wonder why it is being so picky? Well, I do the tests every time, and in this case the test question was the name of my boyfriend's mother (that much was correct). I followed the instructions from this site: http://www.lettertorobin.org/Home.html. Perhaps I need to make adjustments to the programming?
My pendulum is essentially an amethyst bead on a string (it's been exposed to light, as it used to be the bead from a bracelet I had). I actually made two, and when I accidentally picked up the other one, I noticed it swung differently (I use my left hand for my pendulum, and during ready question it swings at an angle to the right, while this one was swinging to the left). Anyways. My point is, I'm pretty sure the pendulum in question is well acquainted with me. As weird as it sounds, maybe I need to introduce it to my boyfriend? Lol, it sounds like I'm talking about a pet.
I'll do a few more experiments, and see if it TRULY cannot ask questions about my boyfriend....
