Upside down candles buried

Hi all, new to here just decided it would be good to get some more info.I'm a believer of supernatural things and am fairly sensitive to things changing around me (not psychic or anywhere close).I generally avoid anything occult .Basically a friend and i are into metal detecting (in our 30's so not kids) and usually it's only fields and some old Roman/Medieval sites here in the UK.

However there's a cemetery near us that is supposedly very haunted and gets a lot of para groups there.It has he ruins of an 1100 year old church at the bottom and a holy spring comes out the back of it.

A famous highwayman was caught there in years past and jailed and hung and the best monument to hide anything we feel is around the ruins so we decided morally we could detect and dig in the (signposted) consecrated ground near the ruins as we had no interest in going anywhere near the graves or any other motive to be there.

Well my friend is a bit wary of the supernatural so i had to dig it and infront of the giant arched ruin (with a ledge/sill at the front) we got metal hits.I dug up a black candle that had been placed in its small base upside down in the ground. Then another 2 hits that formed an L shape and i guessed we'd get a hit in the last corner and we did and even my friend said about the shape.All candles were black and placed upside down about a foot under ground but looked fairly new.Ground was compacted and solid though oddly.

I didn't feel happy so immediately reburied them and spoke aloud that i respectfully put them back and wasn't my intention to find them and nothing to do with me basically.I purposely didn't touch them with my hands physically.

Could it be some kind of home made altar or square? Only thing i can find so far is about hoodoo with the upside down candles.Its probably just kids but its miles out in the country and remote, not somewhere you can get to easily.

Am i likely to have upset anything or picked up something that someone else was intending for themselves?

Appreciate any input as just felt uneasy since digging them up.
