A candle holder breaking is usually a sign that perhaps the goal of the working was not justified. In other experiences a candle that burns extremely small may also mean the same or that you were not as specific as needed, while a particularly high burning flame shows much force being utilized.

He's definitely very big on practically plagiarizing Andrew Chumbley's written works and even the art in his earlier books reeks of Azoetia illustrations.
