When you start Astral Traveling you will have one that will then stick with you to both protect your body while you sleep, and serve as a guide. This type of guide (spirit of fire) is a bit difficult to really get information from and will generally stay out of sight. Some people can travel for years and never even know he is there. I happened to talked a lot when I had my first big Astral Travel as an adult ("Oh dear God help me! Holy shit! )... so my guide was kind enough to talk to me and confirm where it was I was trying to go.
Another type of guide is the teacher. Again, this is one that you might meet up with during lucid dreams or astral travel. I had one that liked to teach sigils and kabbalah -not my favorite subjects but it was interesting. Another teacher liked to show me various historic settings. Still another type is excellent at straightening out the wayward occultist, tough love at it's most frightening. These have generally been people... in appearance... my guess is that they are disincarnate and done reincarnating, although not truely "dead people".
The final type I've dealt with is something much more personal. It's like an aspect of your true self at its most evolved state. It's both animalistic and god-like, base and noble, wise and childlike. It's the culmination of all that you are, in an integrated state. This guide seems to appear in times of great danger or questioning. Mine has an affinity for snakes and gorgons, and has a snake shaped scar on her cheek (thus my name Serpentiferous- which means "bearing a snake").
There are other guides, such as alien-looking beings, but my interaction with them has been brief. I believe there are a few here on the boards that deal with them more regularly, so I'll leave the explanations to them.

Most of my interaction is Clairaudient (sp?), meaning I can hear them. There's a big difference between hearing these guides and normal psychic hearing where you pick up chatter or voices from your own mind. I would almost compare it to having a radio chip imbedded deep inside your left ear (at least for me it's the left). The voice is loud and clear; Enough so, that I'll jump and look around for the source. Like with any encounter with guides, it has to be something important and it's usually just a brief question/warning/comment. I can hear them while awake (and it does sound like itâ??s coming from the physical although it's not) as long as Iâ??m relaxed. This happens once a month at most and isnâ??t as frightening as it might sound.
Pet peeve/rant: Some web sites claim that you communicate with your guides through a form of channeling. Iâ??ve channeled before, and this is not the same for me. My opinion is that channeling is as unpredictable and dangerous as playing with a ouija boardâ?¦ or more so!

First, my clairvoyant (psychic-visual) skills are okay, but not great. So I don't put total faith in them. Guides are not physical, so you don't hear or see them with your normal senses. Usually Iâ??ll only see them while astral traveling or in lucid dreaming. I never got to see the "spirit of fire" because he was in back of me. The "teachers" are much easier to deal with, and I've seen them in the astral, in lucid dreams, and while meditating. The exception to the rule was on one occasion where a guide (not really sure about him yet) appeared in physical form â?? outside in daylight- to myself and a friend, and then disappeared.

personally i asked for one
he showed up a few days later and although we dont 'seem'to converse he does teach me a lot, i know this because i have started doing things by pure instinct without knowing exactly what it was, but was appropriate at the time. two things to remember tho,
1:never ask more than once, as this will attract wannabe guides who could well do you more harm than good
2: also don't worry if your guide is dark aligned (i use dark instead of evil as 'evil' is just another way of doing things because a guide will always give you the option to do whatever he/she/it is teaching you his/her/its way or not eg if something is spiritually attacking u then a dark aligned guide will most likely tell you how to smite it for its impudence but you have the option to do it or not, you will be able to use whatever your guide has taught you or is about to teach you in whatever way seems best to you
this is the perfect way to discover wether a guide is false or not because a flase guide will order you do it it his/her/its way eliminating your choice in the matter. at most a true giude will strongly recomend to do it the way he/she/it shows you
also guides will come and go as they teach you what they can and then move on the to next person
but once you have asked for a guide once there is no need to ask for another to come as one will come in their own time this gives you time to experiment on your own as well, which is as valuble as what a guide can teach
