What do you guys think about doing your own tarot readings? I've heard several say its not a good idea becasue you can influence it so. Mine usually tuirn out shitty, but I am a pessimist...my friend did mine once though and they came out quite different than what I expected them to, which was nice.

No problem. Ceremonial Magickians do it a lot to see what the outcome would be for them if they carried out a particular summoning or action.

I do it from time to time in other ways too, but firstly, to make sure you are in tune so to speak, ask the cards how things have been for you over the last week or month as if you are asking about someone else: "How have things been for ....your name.... over the last month" or ask who you are ie: "Who is ....your name....?" also as if you ar asking about someone else, if it rings true, then you can go on to ask other things.

Also, the usual deep breathing/cleansing/meditating or whatever your regime is before you start helps too :)

*lol* I just sorta try to concentrate on my question and go about it...but what I ask about is a big issue with me, and I CAN NOT keep calm about it despite my best efforts...so I dunno if I'm influencing it with my bad vibes or what. I consulted someone who is supposed to be proficient in such things, and they said I should never do my own readings and they did one for me themselves and told me the exact opposite of what I got and was dead on with the other person involved before I even told them what that person was like. So, I dunno...maybe its just because I don't cleanse myself properly before I do them (or at all really, I have little patience and my mind wanders easily), or I have resigned myself to a grim fate with this subject?

It is true that we all have 'null' days when our readings are inaccurate; but in my experience, if I am reading for others, I do a lot of intuiting and see what part of each card I am drawn to and see what pops into my mind, but when I am doing it for myself, I use the book a lot more because as you say, we influence our readings.

It is also harder to concentrate when you are reading for yourself as it is often done when we are worried or otherwise excited about the outcome.

I don't know whether you use specified layouts, but I am more inclined towards just laying the cards out in any way, say in rows or clusters of any number in each and then being drawn to cards that my eyes seem to rest on more than any other, all of this whilst in a calm state with the question held or repeated in my mind.

A good reading will get cards supporting previously drawn cards.

It is all practice and it does take a lot to recognize when you are in the state you need to be in.

Try casually asking a question and then casually drawing out cards, then try focussing and being drawn to cards and note the difference, it is subtle, but you will see the difference in outcome.

Coolness, thanks for the suggestions. Nobody else understand this situation for me, so I'm kinda wandering around on my own here.

I do my own readings all the time. I simply ask the cards to tell me whatever they feel like telling me.

I only trust myself to do my own reads. Of course, I usually do a deep meditation beforehand, and I try to only read it on the 1st of every month. My reads so far have been quite accurate, especially in warning and cautioning me about things I am doing.

What I have found, is that as the years go by, the way I interpret the cards changes. Initially, everything meant something of the utmost importance, and I rejoiced at my own grandeur whenever a Trump came up, and denied, and feared, when the dreaded 5 or 10 of swords appeared. But in time, if nothing else changes, your razors edge dulls a bit... and this isnt quite a bad thing either, rather, it allows you less haste and more contemplation. Also, doing ones own readings allow your subconscious to put extreme focus on certain aspects which it wishes to communicate to you... but this is, of course, after you have enough practise that you can restrain yourself from jumping to conclusions too quickly, and learn to access the knowledge using more of an emotional sensitivity than a mental one.

I read each one individually unless there are obvious links; it does take a good year or more to really get used to your cards although that depends on how much you use them.

I try not to do it too often. And I only turn to them when I am feeling razzled about something, so I guess I'm not in a good emotional state either. I gotta learn to pick my times better. *lol*

Try setting out a regular weekly or even daily slot and pick out a couple of cards asking "Who is tater cakes?" (or whatever name you are normally known by) and see what happens, the cards should accurately tell you things about yourself however you are feeling as long as you are picking out the cards you are genuinely drawn to.

Can anyone suggest some very simple, discreet methods of cleansing or meditations? I live with people who don't condone my life style, so I couldn't really do very much.

I'd suggest smokeless smudge which is a combo of different oils, the ones I have bought in the past have been, cedar, sage, lavender, copal and sweetgrass to cleanse an area. Tell them it's room freshener to make the area smell nice or different oils such as cedar, sage and lavender of a light bulb again if anyone asks it's "to freshen the air". I use to do this when I lived with my mom and my sister. For meditions just envision white light going into you. Another discreet method to cleanse an area is the coloured bubble method (which was taught to me by this great lady who runs one of the local metaphysical stores in my area). Fill your self with love. If you don't this. It will not work. Then use imagry to wrap the area with a bubble of white for purity, pink for love, black to absorb negativity, gold for positive energy and green for abunance of all of these things. This I find takes no time to do and really does work. It is very quick to take affect as well. I hope that this helps

The best way to attain a "tarot-friendly" mood is to try to focus on the wondrous, magical nature of the cards. Try to feel awed by the fact that you are actually performing a divination and the emotions you get should probably cancel out any disruptive feelings and moods. You might need ritual props or meditation to reach such a state, but it really doesn't matter as long as you "feel magical", if you get me. :)

I've gotten some of the most disturbing reading while in a positive cheerful upbeat mood and the person I'm doing a reading for being equally cheerful and positive. My cards are warded with truth no matter how disturbing or wonderful that truth may be. So though it may be true for some that emotions can affect the cards it's not always so with others. Though I think if you are in a positive state of mind you're more likely to be able to handle whatever bad news is given. Nothing is ever written in stone. Sometimes by knowing the worst case senario you can prepare for it or maybe because of it's warning change your path and avoid the situation completely.

huh. i do my own readings from time to time, with the classical celtic cross layout. most of the readings i get are far more accurate than any that anyone else could do. mainly cause i know the inner workings of my mind better than anyone else, and therefore, am more able to find the exact meaning of the card applied to me.

i've found that if i get a very inaccurate reading, generally, it's because the significator has changed. for a while, i was the queen of spears. well, i did a reading one time, and it was soooo off. so, i read the classification of the queen of spears again, and found that i was no longer like that, or that i was more towards another card. before every reading now, i look up the classifications for the significator and pick one that is more accurate for the time being. that seems to clear up any and all inaccurate readings.
