Is this an example of gnosticism sneaking into ordinary culture ... or an example of the exploitation of the most valuable?

Dammit Ridley, out of all the things you could use, why do you have to jack Thunder, Perfect Mind. I guess some might see it as a cool little shout out for the Gnostics but I think it cheapens it and might open it up for exploitation.

A friend of mine wrote this in observation of the film/commercial

"Thunder Perfect Mindâ??â??â??it's the alluring fragrance . . . and the
repellant stench; it's the tantalizing charm of the seductress . . .
and the noisome emanation of a rotting carcass . . . ."

*lol*

The very notion of using Gnostic texts to sell perfume seems so much at odds to me that I can't believe these film makers actually know anything about the text beyond it being a "cool poem".

I suppose you couldn't use 'Ring aroudn the Rosey' - a childrens rhyme regarding the stench of rotting bodies in the street during the Black Plague. Oh well, they did use the Beatles to sell pizza and shoes.

Why don't they use JC for a Long John Silver's commercial - never empty bucket of fish special or something?

Consumerism leaves an unplesant taste in my mouth, but this has subversive potential. Imagine all the web searches that will turn up the text when people are looking for info about the perfume! This may expose gnosticism to a larger audience.

the next gnostic film will go like this---

Gnostic Initiate: So what are you saying Valentinius, that I can dodge arrows?

Valentinius: What I'm saying is when your ready, you won't have to.

Gnostic Initiate:Whoa

I wonder if you people would help me with answering this question?

I used a passage from the above to show a connectedness with another verse that IMHO showed the unfathomable nature of the divine, and I was asked what the Dickens does The Thunder, Perfect Mind mean?

From my understanding (and I don't know whether the translation is an approximation of the original title or a literal translation ...or what?) I see the text almost as an unapologetic statement; probably what could almost be termed a fire-and-brimstone speech from the One, as if to say 'Accept me as I am.' That's where I'd see the connection - the perfect mind is thundering. 'I am full of contradictions because I am everything, and if you think you understand that, you will be wrong because I am incomprehensible, but if you can hear, hear (understand truly) what I say'

This was the answer I gave, but I wonder if anyone else would share their interpretation of what it means?

Hey, Nebankh

The more common understanding of the title is that "Perfect Mind" is one of the common Platonist (and Stoic) references to the early emenation from the prime source generally categorized in some way as "Mind" or "Thought", and is personified as female. In Gnostic context this would be Sophia, but it is not clear if this is actually originally a Gnostic text (though I would like to point out that the formula does appear in other Gnostic and semi-Gnostic writings).

In any event, it does fit well with the more obvious conception of Sophia with the contrast between her high and low forms. That is to say, she is called "Virgin" in her high form, and "whore" in her fallen form.... etc.

The "Thunder" part is a bit less obvious. I have seen people get many things from it, including your notion of power of the voice of the speaker. Others believe it is meant to point out that the speaker is a power sent from a higher force, or that in the way thunder warns of a storm, the Perfect Mind is alerting those who can hear her.
