This forum (Gnosticism) is very small...

 Why not expand it to include all the "variations" of early Mystical thought?

This is something I feel strongly about. I hope pmcv will keep this forum to its scholarly standard, as it is the only forum at OF which is devoted to actual scholarly enquiry and not made up bullshit. I have great admiration for it for that reason, that there be one forum on OF where crap nonsense isn't tolerated.

I agree with Ludi, it's the most incisive forum, although I personally don't contribute to it much, it contributes much to me in the form of information I can honestly say has usually come from a knowledgable source...ie, the mod!

So far you're not addressing my main concern ...why is one form of Mysticism promoted and not others?

http://www.themystica.com/mystica/articles/m/mysticism.html

The term "mysticism" comes from the classical Greco-Roman mystery cults...

The ultimate expression of monistic mysticism is perhaps best displayed in the Upanishads of India, as in the concepts of "I am Brahman" (the all-pervading principle) and tat tram asi "that thou art," meaning that the soul is the eternal and Absolute Being. Monistic mysticism is also found in Taoism, which seeks unity with Tao, the ineffable way. Theistic mysticism, unity with God, characterizes Christianity, Judaism (in the Kabbalah), and Islam (the Sufi sect), and is also found in Hinduism.

There are other forms of mysticism throughout the world. Many assume a religious nature according to the beliefs and practices of the practitioners. Most of these states of mysticism commonly possess what is deemed a mystical communion with what is considered sacred...

Never mind ...if you want to leave it as it is... I see that some of the other forms of Mysticism are included in other forums. (Ancient Magic & Mythology and Eastern Faiths mainly.)

Heh, it happens ;)

Just remember that PMCV especially tries to keep this forum to traditional, historic Gnosticism for a reason. That reason being, as I'm sure you'll see the next time you open up a Crowley or LaVey thread in Ceremonial Magick or Satanism, respectively, that shit gets watered down real easily. That, and there's a lot of stuff which passes as "Gnosticism" which has very little to do with the actual religions under that name. See also: the ganking of the term "Gnosis" by Chaoists ;)

Hey Mystikewi, you state....]

So far you're not addressing my main concern ...why is one form of Mysticism promoted and not others?

As I guess you have already figured... it is because the word "Gnosticism" and "Mysticism" don't actually mean the same thing. However, I really do understand that perhaps the focus here seems particularly specific to many. I wold like to reach some middle ground that communicates the best literary points of the "Gnostic" system.
