During meditation a while ago my focus was on animals and their relation to me. For the last year my link to many occult practices has all but severed and my rather emotional connection to animals has lead me to look into practices that are more suited to this kind of feeling.
The meditation began in a cave like room full of things that I hold close to me, things like my 200 year old books, my writing equipment, my statues of Buddha and so on...Outside I walked through along a river and into woods where I came to a clearing. I stood in the clearing and through the bushes came two animals; a deer and a blackbird; both of whom seem to be there for me. I rather understand blackbird, as I have often found them a comforting sight for some reason. Both ravens and blackbirds, both being black (except I believe female blackbirds are brown? am I imagining things there?), a colour which I feel very much at home in.
But the deer? I am not totally sure what this vision means. Anyone's suggestions would be appreciated.

Well, not to be offensive, are you sure it was blackbirds and not ravens? They each hold a different significance. They have some similarities, but they are different. And ravens and deer often "co-habitate" dreams.
As far as the deer, deer tend to stand for caution and weighted decisions. If you ever watch deer, they are always cautious. Always watching from the fringes until they know the time is right for them to move. They look at their world, absorb all of the information and make a decision after watching and going over all the aspects of the situation. The only time this doesn't happen is in the "fight or flight" mode of survival. Otherwise, they are always listening, always watching. They also can mean an aspect of a calming. They are serene and patient.

I'm somewhat sure it was a blackbird. Blackbirds are much smaller than ravens and it didn't strike me as a particularly large bird in my dream.

funny enough, i went hunting with a friend the other day (first time ever) and he killed a blackbird.

I believe the "Cave" you are speaking of is the, "Cave of Forgotten Memories." Have you ever worked on developing your, "Inner Pearl?" Because what you are describing sounds very closely related to the two.
