Speaking in tongues?

Who has experienced "speaking in tongues"?

I learned it when I was involved with Pentecostal/Charismatic groups.
I still find it a powerful spiritual "tool" (when I remember to use it).

I believe it allows your higher self to express itself, and even though you may not consciously understand it it can still be powerful and effective.

"Speaking in tongues" is also called Glossolalia. (You probably knew that.)
Aside from Christians, certain religious groups also have been observed to practice some form of glossolalia. Glossolalia is evident in the renowned ancient Oracle of Delphi, whereby a priestess of the god Apollo (called a sibyl) speaks in strange utterances, supposedly through the spirit of Apollo in her... Glossolalia has also been observed in shamanism and the Voodoo religion of Haiti.

Speaking in tongues?

I really don't know a whole lot about it. I have a friend that was invited to his parent's new church they joined and it freaked him out when they did it I guess. He isn't a very good descriptive person though. Said people were basically falling down a lot and all that. But he did raise one question. When they started to do this the minister or whatever said something like... ok brother john is going to let the spirit of christ (I can't remember exactly what the wording was) into him and speak and would brother david please interpret. Ok so what we understood about it was that it is supposed to be your own language with god...so how can someone else interpret it?

As I said...I don't know anything about it. So if it is supposed to be your own language with god...were they just doing this for show or what?

The closest I have ever come to speaking in tongues was a very long time ago myself and some occult friends were meditating together to help a friend of ours and all I remember was that I had my eyes closed and then "woke up" an hour later. Now I have no idea whether or not I actually fell asleep or what...sitting cross legged on the floor (which is not my m.o for sleeping) but everyone was telling me that I stood up and started being angry and speaking what they thought might have been German. A language which I do not know and neither did they. Anyway that would be the closest I came...and I don't remember it lol Of course... if my friends at the time were believeable that is :D

There's seems to be many variations of it...

A good time to try it is when you are feeling some strong emotion but can't really put it into words (or if you don't really want to put it into normal langauge)... you can express what you feel verbally but not in your normal langauge... (you can do it alone).

Interpreters can pick up on the spirit of your expression and put it into normal language.
The person speaking in tongues may be able to interpret it themselves too sometimes.

So whats the difference then between "speaking in Tongues" and speaking gibberish.

I'm not entirely sure how speaking gibberish is very helpful for anything. I went to a lot of churches where "speaking in tongues" was the norm, and that's all it is...You utter random sounds. If you're lucky, somebody that speaks a non-english language will be standing nearby while you speak it, so they can hear a word that sounds something like a word in another language, and claim you were speaking that language fluently.

Well I do speak in "tongues" and can interpret it. I dubbed the langauge as "Marbigash." My friend also speaks the same langauge too. In my sig, the gibberish in the bottem is the same langauge or tongue or whatever. It makes it easier for me to express things since I have a hard time as it is with talking normal english, even though I've spoken english all my life.

You won't really know the effect it can have on you unless you try it for yourself.
I really do experience it as my higher (or deeper) self expressing itself, and that can be a very edifying experience. :) (It bypasses your conscious, critical thinking mind. ;) )

Funny you mention Delphi....I feel I have a past life there. Very profound visions. My "speaking in tongues" just happens....when I'm totally into my spiritual energy, ritual, kundalini yoga...I've remembered what I say, I've researched, I've spoken in Egyptian, Greek and Sumerian....I speak word's of love and worship, a few premonitions too.

I don't think you can learn to speak in tongues...like I said, it just happens to me, when it does happen my energy is very high. I don't fall down...I get breathless and euphoric, but I don't make a silly ass of myself : ).

I attended a "non-denominational" [isn't that a denomination? lol] church for a while when I was younger.

Often there would be people speaking in tongues and being "layed down" by the minister [this being the laying on of hands on a person and their fainting].

I never personally spoke in tongue(s) but I can clearly remember the minster doing it. He would usually say something like "oh I feel the holy spirit" followed by shaking and yelling something unintelligable. It was sort-of scary when your a little kid and there are people screaming nonsense at the top of their lungs.

I also had the laying of hands on me and yes, I fainted. Interesting stuff considering he said he did it in the name of the name of Jesus, yet I don't acknowledge him.

I don't think I can yell at the top of my lungs when I go into my trances (hey that's a good way to explain it)...when I speak, it's a whisper almost, I doesn't sound like me either.
I can pass healing energy through my hands too, but I don't feel they go together. Two separate things, for me at least.

Mt roommate has told me that I often speak in some form of Germanic language, though I've never studied German in my life. That's about as close as I get.

They are two separate things, I just thought I would share them both since I had the old memory out of the closet.

Could there be a relation between this and Reverse Speech (and I mean other then they are currently next to each other in the thread list :P )

Other then that I've nothing to add to this...as all my information on it is second hand and hear-say.

Yeah, it could be seen as a verbal form of spontaneous tai-chi. I don't really do it, but I occasionally feel like doing it. Too bad I'm rarely alone when it happens so I never say anything, except in my mind.

English is a Germanic language, and you apparently speak English...

I've observed that the gibberish I feel like saying is more like spontaneous vowel-rich mantras than a real language, e.g. Ayanee eanae ahata, rihanaia ee.

It makes a big difference if you let it flow from you, Sushumma, rather than just thinking about doing it (even if you are alone).

Here's a phonetically spelled *sample* of what I come up with...
Bres'ma kan'oc rema sal'et gamas hun'so lema...

...but the tone of the sound may also be important. :p

As a child I developed this kind of thing, my friend also developed his "mishmala" independant of knowing about glossalalia. It bares resemblance to Enochian.

I believe that glossalalia or speaking in tongues is memories (at least for me). Cuz when it happens to me, sometimes I get flashes of visions...from my past lives.

I also agree with Hecate's Priestess on that. When I awakened some memories deep within me, I started to speak in "tongues" but who knows really...maybe this is just how I am or how I foudn a new way to express myself. Though I lean more to what Hecate says on that.
