Music and one's subconscious

I know the subconscious is literal that if I tell myself something even though I know it to be false my subconscious takes it as a truth and after awhile consciously I take it as a truth. My question here is... when singing or listening to a song that is set in the first person, does one's subconscious see it as a truth set to me the individual? What are your thoughts?

Examples: R. Kelly "I'm the World's Greatest", Mariah Cary "I Can Make it Through the Rain" When I get into my serious lows I can feel myself being lifted when I hear these songs. I have a CD just of songs that clash with my thoughts in my lows.

smiles...

Hey there, Naki!

I want to take issue with one thing you said, which was: "...if I tell myself something even though I know it to be false my subconscious takes it as a truth and after awhile consciously I take it as a truth." The subconscious doesn't really discriminate in terms of thruth or non-truth, it just accepts everything into the mix. That being said, your question is an apt one because even if the subconscious is not judging the relative truth of a statement, it is still holding on to it. Music is an amazing way to (meta)program oneself...remember the episode of Happy Days when Potsie wrote a song about the cardiovascular system so he could pass his anatomy test? Chances are the character would never have forgotten that material because of the melodic context it was placed into. It is my experience that melodies create memories as strong as scents...if I hear even a snatch of Mitch Miller (especially the Xmas album) or the cast album of "Jesus Christ Superstar", I am transported to the huge console stereo system my parents had when I was wee and can vividly see the green interior illumination of the radio dial. I also reexperience the good feelings (at a distance, of course) that were associated with those records and my family.

Why not experiment by burning a cd with a bunch of songs you know bring your mood up and another with a bunch of songs that bring you down and see how you can effect your mood by letting them play in the background?

Great topic!

Mark

With a small talent in music composition and an understanding of the effects of number and number patterns on the psyche, it shouldn't be too difficult to compose a piece of music with an effective magickal effect on the listener built in. I believe that Tool's drummer composed the drum track for the opening song on Lateralus using fibonnacci sequences, and some 'classical' composers have encoded complex mathematical formulae in their works.

EDITED because I didn't realise the quote function worked like that... Leibniz didn't actually post that, he's dead, I was just quoting him ;)

Music seems to permeate my every living moment and I can say, without a doubt, that I have noticed that particular music seems to have a place in various parts of my day.

Recently, my mornings have begun with tunes such as Sam & Dave, Funkadelic (particularly "Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow"), May Blitz, Wilson Pickett, the Doors, etc... while my days at work are usually filled with the sounds of Boris, Nurse With Wound, Beth Gibbons, Organum, Art Ensemble of Chicago, etc...

When I'm home it depends upon what I'm doing. I'm usually painting when at home and at that time I find myself listening to the likes of Charles Mingus, Joseph Jarman, Masonna, Nurse With Wound, Sunn O))), Khanate, etc...

The selection seems to change from week to week but being that I'm a vinyl fanatic, My weekly stack of LPs is usually piled up in front of my turntable. At the end of the week, often, I'll write down what I've had in rotation. In looking at my selcetion for the week I can usually get a good idea as to where my head has been.

Songs sung in the first person, from my experience
most definately take on a more personal meaning
in the subconscious mind. Though consciously you
know that the "I" is really the singer and their life
circumstances, the subconscious mind does not take
that into account. Which is interesting because according
to most metaphysicists (Buddhists included), there
is no separate "you" or "I." We are the same being.
That being said, I know that this is the way my
subconcsious works. So I have used this knowledge
to do just as Mmothra indicated: metaprogram myself.
I listened to Christina Aguilera's "Fighter" and "Beautiful"
religiously before going to Alanis Morissette's "Still" and
"Sorry To Myself."
It's incredibly effective, I recommend it to all!

"Fighter"
Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldnt know
Just how capable I am to pull through...
Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture
I wouldn't know how to be this way now and never back down...

"Beautiful"
We're the song inside the tune
Full of beautiful mistakes
Don't you bring me down today

Indeed, Danny is quite an architect. Not only is the entire song musically constructed in league with the fibonnacci sequence, the vocals are at times split in syllables to conjoin with the rest. Great example Caradoc.

I almost always wake up with a song in my head which affects my day. There will be one particular line which I just sing without planning to. Today it was, Let me Die in my Footsteps/Before I go down under the ground, so I'm quite worried
