I have an idea but I don't know where to start. I am wanting to build a device/item that will allow me to see and hear ethereal entities. I'm wanting something that can be worn, preferably inconspicuously, but if such isn't possible I'm more than willing to compromise. I would like more than anything to do most of the work myself, so I'm just looking for advice on where to start, but I will take anything anyone is willing to give.

If such an item was invented it would already be quite popular.

I recommend you start by making a talisman and possibly clairvoyance oil that goes with it. Wearing a talisman under your clothes or in your pocket and dabbing some oil in your forehead or onto your eyelids should be inconspicious.

Yes but how. The Magus has too many missing details on how to construct a working talisman, and the one's I've built myself were hodgepodged together. I don't even know if it still works. And where would I find a recipe for such an oil?

you might try the stone-with-a-hole trick, make it into a monicle (and no I did not steal the idea from the spiderwick cronicles, it's been around quite longer than that)
or enchant yourself a pair of glasses.
or you could just make a spell to give yourself "the sight" without making a thing, though I understand the thingmaking, I rather enjoy it.
