I have found Edmund Jacobson's progressive relaxation method quite effective. After closing the eyes, one starts with toes and ends with scalp or vice-versa. One has to cover whole body in bits of limbs/organs. Each limb is clenched/tensed and then de-clenched/released.
Scanning is closing the eyes and then progressively concentrating on body part by part.

While practising it, one should imagine tension getting drained away. Dr. Bruce Goldberg has also explained the process of relaxation well.

I've used this method as well and am inclined to agree with you on the effectiveness.
It is also excellent if you want to fall into a very deep sleep and feel exceedingly well rested on four hours of sleep.
