I was wondering what your opinions were about something I read a while ago. It was a book on dark magic and it stated that dealing with too much dark energy could create perversions in the user. These were strange fetishes and antisocial desires. I think it suggested that dealing with darker forces would eventually cause the user to vibrate at the same frequencies, causing the user to degenerate so to speak (It was of the opinion that dark energies were naturally harmful to humans) Do you believe this? If so how do you protect yourself from this degradation?

I definitely believe that balance is critical. But, I wouldn't necessarily use the term "pervert," as it's not my position to judge the philosophical idea of darkness as either good or bad.
However, I do believe that working with certain energies long enough, or even focusing on a certain mind-set or emotional level, will, as you put it, "eventually cause the user to vibrate at the same frequencies."
Aleister Crowley states this 'law' in Magick in Theory and Practice thusly:
"He may attract to himself any force of the Universe by making himself a fit receptacle for it, and arranging conditions so that its nature compels it to flow toward him."
This sums it up well, I think.
As for using protection, I most definitely do. I commonly protect my area with wards and use banishing/protection rituals when doing anything magical.

Without doubt or hesitation how can one be harmed?
Considering protection means that one foresees failure.

Very easily. Just ask this question to anyone who's ever been mugged or raped or murdered. It doesn't require a certain frame of mind for something such as this to happen.

Having protection is nothing more than planning ahead. "An ounce of planning is worth a pound of cure." This is why people take self-defense courses or carry a weapon. The world of occultism and magic is not so much different from this.

It happens with fluff bunnies, too. Only in a different way.
If you work with "negative" energy, it will affect you. Same with positive. Either way, if you saturate yourself with something, it is bound and determined to have lingering effects and will, in my opinion.

I don't particularly want to get into the 'what of other people' debate because all kinds of crazy things are being done right now as I type. There's always an exception to the rule somewhere.
I was considering something that Crowley wrote about fluidity in motion when I wrote that. Without the distraction of the conscious mind - primed in the task prior to the operation - we are not held back by any form of negative thought. By which I imply thought that is not compliant with will.
If we simply 'are' (whatever it may be: conduit of retribution, devastation...) without concern then we will receive no backlash.
Bruce Lee once said, "Don't think. Feel."

I know that it would be irresponsible of me to teach someone to deliberately ignore protection, but it is not for me. I don't need it. I accept whatever happens. I have harmed myself indirectly through my work, but this is my personal method. I don't ever feel out of my depth.
What doesn't kill me will only make me stronger; May death make me wiser.
'Negative' (evil) is something that works against me whilst 'positive' things are good for me. If I am raising 'dark' energies (by which I assume Illuminous means potentially damaging energies) then I do so with love and direct them with my love. The result may manifest as harming someone but I do so with the best intentions.
It sounds a little warped, I know. But we are talking about dark energies here.

Rather than thinking that these things are due to 'energies', become aware that the idea of darkness means explore the ideas of taboo of fetish and perversion, to understand what it is to be outside of consensus tastes and awareness, to be on the Outside.
I don't understand why one would want to avoid finding out one has a fetish, but maybe Im just entirely aware that I am in fact, a pervert.
The whole postive and negative polarity is only really rooted in what I accept versus what is normally accepted by all, for me anyhow.
Attributing it to waves or frequencies is just dressing up that idea, IMO.
I wouldn't like the darkside if I was the only pervert and antisocial blackened jerk anyhow. ;P
To have the desire to remain unaware of those certain qualities and natures doesnt make one an ideal candidate for initiation on the black path.
None of whats said so far by myself being what you wanted to hear probably, but I'll be nice and sum it up in the way everyone wants to hear;
Black slimy monsters from the Nth realm of the netherworld will crawl up your butt and make you a very bad person if you dabble in the crafts riddled with their sort of dark energies and powers. OoooOoooOOooooo beware and be wary!!!
See? Thats my antisocialism, and I fucking love it.

*squirms* black slimy monsters up my butt....mmm....
lol yes, I can definitely say I have become perverted. Or more perverted. But I don't feel that I have imposed anything, merely uncovered what was already there. In fact, it never ceases to amaze me, the bizarre and yet beautiful "perversions" I am capable of discovering within myself, if I look openly and without judgement
And yes, I have had the same feeling, that it is the "dark energy" which leads me to these things. But I must reiterate, for me it seems only to show me what lies hidden and waiting, rather than bending me to its form. Of course, uncoverign those things _does_ shape me, but it is and always was all within me!

The whole universe with all its qualities & forms resides in every human soul. By our own lower nature (temper, character etc.) we may have a stronger affinity to a numerous energy cascades within it. It comes down to a matter of perspective and the power of will to be able to control these affinities or to be obsessed and destroyed/degenerated by them, be they positive or negative in nature. One shouldn't be attached too strongly or too long to a certain mind-set or form of energy, but strive to see that it has a value only as a tool, a mere means to an end.
That is if one doesn't want to be ripped apart by entropy, and has the power to resist the bond. Not every one has, you can see hundreds of obsessed or "demonized" people just by taking a straw in the city. And they never even recognize it.
But yes, I think that the dark path has made me even more anti-social. There are always people trying to drag you down into the mud where the slime live, so it is more often just better to stay away from them. The more I think of it, it has very little to do with any certain path though.

As most have already stated, dealing with a certain type of energy tends to affect you in some way. Usually, it adds certain qualities of itself to your own and in most cases, it happens subconsciously. I can't say that in the case of Dark Energies this definetaly means degredation(perversion etc) but it certainly does align your qualities accordingly, as any other type of energy would if you interact with it long enough. How will this alignment occur, I don't think we can actually pinpoint as it depends on lots of things but I agree about the antisocial desires and I think it would be in those lines, among other things.
As for protecting yourself from it, I am not sure it is possible to stay unaffected in the long run. It tends to change personal qualities/habits/tendencies, and after those change, you no longer want to protect yourself(because that's what you are). Also, since you choose to use a type of energy in the first place, chances are you resonate with it fairly well already.
However, in cases this does not apply, apart from banishing rituals and wardings, I think taking a look at yourself from time to time and not simply acting upon impulse is helpful. However, I think that staying unaffected is not an option(at least in the long run), especially if you use something for a long time.

I think the same book described having to come to terms with your "shadow self" no matter what path you took. When you reach a certain level I guess you need to bring balance between the duality in yourself. I've always had a struggle going on between the light and the darker aspects of myself. I expect everyone has it but doesn't always see it.
I heard a good quote on a film last night "Dance with the devil and the devil don't change, Devil changes you" Thanks for your replies I enjoyed reading them.

"Whoever fights monsters should see that in the process one doesn't become the monster. And, when staring into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you..." Aye?
What I would like to point out also, is that there are no "dark energies" or "light energies", but only energy that reveals itself to us as dark/light depending on the mind set of our psyche. The light can be scorching as hell as well as darkness can be comforting as heaven...I know, it is important to make a dualistic separation between the two in normal conversation, but in essence, especially Satanism has no use for dualism.
"A given power represents to me as [insert the name]..."

Yes I was just using the term dark as a way of describing the negative forces in magic such as entrophy. Most occultists describe any destructive forms of magic as dark. I'd agree with what the others said concerning protection, especially when dealing with harmful energies. At the very least you should clean your chakras after any dark workings. Dualism is a complicated subject considering that physical reality is based on dualities. I'm all for taking away the labels of good and evil however.

The only disadvantage in contributing to a forum with such a large community is that I must select whom I shall quote and reply to, but I must say that I enjoy all that has been written.

Certainly, if we are to search for their source. Though I would hope that when we do so, we maintain an open mind with we which may assimilate the nature into our own psyche. Then, the key being that when we unleash this nature it is done so with a mind closed like a fortress. Not as a protection (though this is a side effect) but as a means of focus in intent and intensity.
Some questions might be, 'Just how debauched do we need to become to master such arts? Do we have to display this nature in act, or is imagination enough?'

Yes. We can open our minds to anything. Those who fail to do so out of some failing sense of 'right' are doing themselves disservice when faced not only with survival on a basic level but also on a level of social integration.
Furthering your comment, this is why I set my mind 'before' entertaining magical forces, then reset it afterwards and disassociate. I would be torn apart if I were to hex with the socially conscious mind that I need for my daily life.

So long as we don't become obsessed, I would say that it builds a more complex character. Courting darkness should increase one's diversity if one knows himself well enough to begin with. I would question whether it is more that those who feel antisocial are drawn to darkness, rather than darkness perverting people. It may 'uncover' an inner darkness, as has already been stated, but I don't believe that darkness has anything to do with instilling perversion in its true disciples.
Those who transform are willing to do so. If not, then they work with weak wills.

Great question then.
The second part I'll answer first, w/ another question, whats better an armchair magician or someone who actually goes out and does it? Unless by imagination you mean masturbation I suppose, which is still an act.
Lets not get into the ramifications of what if someone is doing something illeagle in that case, because we know that would defeat the point of focus on Self Interest.
;p
I'd like to think that in my case, I sought out to be as perverted and alienated as possible, and I found my way back to balance from there. The latter which seemed pretty weird and unatural from my perspective at that point, so I sensed its where I should explore.
Its obvious to anyone of intelligence that one isn't going thru this process just to be a perverted weirdo by the end of the day.
I think it comes down to just that, dont fuck around if you arent smart enough to get your head screwed on back straight.
Anyways, my goal is more than mastery, its for fun and pleasure, following my nose.
As far as closing off the mind like a fort, Im a more of a cannonball in the pool kind of guy. Its refreshing versus the uncomfortable tip-toe technique.
I like to search every area of myself, w/ impliments made of rubber haha jk! but what I mean is that I think that its best to take a good look at everything in the psyche, everything. Things like vulnerability to love are even harder things to deal with for some than the prospects of said rubber impliments in unsaid places.
As you can tell, Im a big fan of crossing lines or demolishing them.
I dont know what everyone is so afraid of, like its the goddamn boogy man.
I feel like sometimes people are afraid of who they think they might be hiding underneath, but I say shit, if you just let that guy have some breathing room maybe you could understand him and dispel the rumors you heard, or respect that he was just going thru a phase in college when that happened.
what?
yes.

I feel like sometimes people are afraid of who they think they might be hiding underneath, but I say shit, if you just let that guy have some breathing room maybe you could understand him and dispel the rumors you heard, or respect that he was just going thru a phase in college when that happened.
what?
yes.

I think working with said "energies" has balanced me out quite a bit. Its given me wisdom I would not have gained through other studies. It gives me balance through understanding of darker "energies" and forces beyond the conventional.

From my point of view, even someone with an especially vivid imagination is unlikely to be transformed in any meaningful way by just envisioning experiences but not actually engaging in them. The second part I'll answer first, w/ another question, whats better an armchair magician or someone who actually goes out and does it? Unless by imagination you mean masturbation I suppose, which is still an act.

This threads given me much food for thought.
Die before death, But even with the best preparation you can be overwhelmed sometimes. Theres some forces that just take your head clean off and it takes a lot of time to get it back together again. Everyones got things within that they'd rather not face and they're afraid of. My problem is I'm drawn and repelled by the darkness both at the same time. Maybe thats just where my head is at the moment though.
Ludi, I think the power of imagination is sometimes underestimated. It can be a very powerful tool in manifestation. People manifest things without even realizing it.
Jas, That quote was from 8mm with Nicolas cage. It might have been in the ninth gate aswell though.

Oh yes, I agree the power of the imagination is underestimated, but manifesting something goes beyond merely imagining it. By "transformation" I mean transformation of the self. To imagine traveling to a place is not the same, has not the same depth, as actually physically going there. Imagining an action does not, in my experience, have the same effect as actually physically doing it. Of course, it may be I have an especially feeble imagination!

We are all a reflection of the negative........ Most people are simply to stupid and blind, and lack the ability to realize this fact. *I conversed with my own image within the mirror; the reality he spoke of was so much like my own it frightened me.... Then I stepped through.*

Sorry Ludi I misunderstood you.
Aja, I don't think I understand you. How are we all the reflection of the negative? Do you mean we all have negative aspects?

I have a good exercise that involves gazing into a mirror at your reflection. Its called the beast within. Its used to access your primal self (since it can be a good source of power)
But whos to say it is? (If your reflection ever talks back let me know)Who's to say that the reality that our image experiences isn't as real as our own.
