What does it really mean to be evil?

Sure, the question doesn't have an objective answer, but I'd like to see what other people think.

I've got my own ideas on it. I think evil is synonymous with hedonism but with a little something extra. Crowley put it in a way that I never could -- I just don't have his way with words. He elocutes it in a passage describing the manner of the absinthe drinker:

"What is there in absinthe that makes it a separate cult? ... Even in ruin and in degradation it remains a thing apart: its victims wear a ghastly aureole all their own, and in their peculiar hell yet gloat with a sinister perversion of pride that they are not as other men." -- Aleister Crowley

Yep, that's the stuff of evil.

there is no good there is no evil, just moral choices, evil is only what is frowned upon by the collective of the current society, times change and so does the meaning of evil.

To me the Principal of Evil is anything that prevents your Freedom of Will and Spiritual ascension.

To start a Union in a predominately non-Union shop, though a legally protected act many fear dismissal and the ability to care for their families financially because of the mention of it and supervisors threats (off the record of course!) and upper echelons scare tactics (however subdued). Some are dismissed- but some stand and prevail.

If I can kill another man for no reason other than someone else's politics on the field(s) of battle of their choice while they are trying to do the same to me, I damn sure better be able to squeeze every ounce of freedom from a tit that is running dry.

There are other topics about this, but anyway--

This is my standard, non-sarcastic, helpful type answer that I would give to a student or a friend who asked me this question: Evil is like pornography. It is nearly impossible to define in terms of verbiage only, but I always know it when I see it.

I hope this was helpful! xoxo Scarlett

The sensation that something is "evil", is part of instinct.
If a mom saw someone kill her baby, she'd feel that person was very evil.
The sensation of evil in that way, is like a step up from fear and pain.
That's the term in a more natural sense.

Religious "evil", however, is much different. It's plastic and it's political.

Jungle monkies probably feel that snakes are evil. If not evil, then terrible and bad. That's part of the whole fear-pain-danger-hate-aversion thing.

Overcoming & gaining an evil, is like overcoming fear, pain and inhibition, then putting its rewards to good use.

"Evil" as a catch-all-term, would be meaningless. I wont comment on its wider use.

Evil is all what is contrary to your good, either in the long or short run, other than that evil is a relative term in the lowr form, but all that opposes the will of the Onse Thing, is Evil if ever such a thing was possible.

Evil is what hinders the Evolution of man Kind in all ways and shapes and has simply that one purpose.

There is good. I once began my journey to save the world, only to realize it did not wish to be saved.

Then I realized I was living according to the will of others, and still do in many ways. But, currently I am trying to find what makes me happy. And that's "evil", so I am no longer concerned with the dictates of my fellow man.

In the end evil could be said to be extreme selfishness, with a disregard to the well being of others relative comfort level. In evil "I" is sacred. in good "WE" is sacred. I defer to "I" .
