Servitors.

Post by Lucius »

This is a burning question of mine, it is of morality.
When one makes a servitor, it is alive and even though it is from your own energy (an extension of) it is still alive.
So when it comes to re-absorbing it, you've created a servitor, life, and then you're ending it's life. And when it's kicking and dying and screaming and one re-absorbs it, is that moral?

My situation is this, I made a servitor for protection of my coven (when it is set up) and myself. Now usually I re-absorb servitors but this time it grew very quickly and learnt a lot very quickly, it impressed me. In every right it is now it's own spirit and we came to an agreement, I keep it's sygil and so retain some control over it (him) and in return he can be free (ish), now this is actually working out very well for me because it is grateful and quiet powerful now (it has grown a LOT) and worked out well for him. My question is this -he is honest and honour is a big deal to him but is there any way this can blow up in my face? I am going to make a witchengine so that he doesn't need to feed from me, he doesn't really anyway to be honest but still- is there any way this can blow up in my face? If so, what can I do to prevent this?

To be honest, I have grown to liking him, he is interesting to have around lol but yeah so I really don't want to have to break my word and re-absorb him.
Thank you for reading,
Yours,

Speaking from my own experience,I think its is really good for you and your mental stability to have made such an entity with only one (or atleast few
ideals and characteristics) that strongly relies on producing a single effect. This being protection,I would assume it is out of its nature to be malevolent towards you.I would advise however, that you keep out the performances of such design that would enhance its "learning" or adaptability reactions on its environment, since this would probably bring(along with other possibly unwanted stuff) the realisation of polarities within beings own sphere. The adverse opposite effects are not hard to imagine, keep it simple and altrough freeing it,it should always follow your command and be dominated by your will, otherwise what can happen is basically anyones guess...

For me, morality doesn't come into play here at all when I kill a servitor - I gave it life and I will take it just the same. If I personally felt some sort of moral issue with it, it's an emotional attachment and a possible liability. Sometimes I have killed servitors just because I got attached to them, and it was affecting my way of thinking/using them. Don't know if that's for you, but it was for me.

I created a servitor that I keep around as a gen purpose workhorse. While it was gaining cohesion I had to write a bunch of sigils defining its operational parameters, and I also wrote in an emergency kill switch in case it did get out of hand, learn new things, or come up with its own plans that were counterproductive to my own. Maybe try that?

Thank you, a kill switch- I should use that in future that's a great idea thank you Azkhet :) I guess you're right, the whole morality issue only exists because I feel emotionally attached to it is because it has saved my life.

In future I think I'll take your advice, make a kill switch and not give it the parameters to adapt and think for itself. Unfortunately this servitor is already completely self aware and I have released it free on the condition that it still does what I say- I linked it to the sygil, so as long as I have the sygil I can use it (although I can re-create the sygil I linked it to a specific copy of it).

Really a noob question but I have been thinking about servitors for a while now. How does one go about to create them, communicate and so forth? Are there any good guides out there? I understand that I intrude on the discussion about morality but I guess that you can help me out with this.
This too shall pass.

There Creating Magickal Entities book is pretty decent, the Familiar Spirits (I think, the one by Tyson IIRC) sucks, and this is a decent free resource:

I started off Reading Liber Null, but it is a pretty heavy text and to be honest it's not entirely clear- I had to read it a few times to understand it and even then... [bummed]

But it's a good intro, yeah both of the above are really good as well.
