Black Dementor/Ring Wraith/sort of thingies

Post by Serenitydawn »

Has anyone ever seen or heard of these things? It gets freezing when they come around just like in Harry Potter. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of disociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. ~ H.P. Lovecraft

Well, Rowling said the dementors were a metaphor for the depression she struggled against, but there's a belief that she got the dementors from the ringwraiths (as well as the sorc's stone, dobby, etc, stolen from LoTR, but that's besides the point.) Tolkien more or less invented the fantasy genre, and the descriptions he gives of the Nazgul aren't terribly specific, other than repeating variations of "dark, shadowy, scary" - even the "riders in black" thing is a disguise. Since they're the tortured souls of undead kings bound to serve in hellish slavery forever, they bring with them the stench of fear and despair and the feeling of the grave - so cold, frightening, harrowing, among other things. So, Tolkien made it up, Rowling made it up more.

Actually,as you can see from the examples below,Tolkien like other later and earlier authors, begged, stole and borrowed from existing mythology and folk cultures.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barrow_wights

"Barrow-wights are wraith-like creatures in J. R. R. Tolkien's world of Middle-earth, based on the Old Norse Draugr. Barrow refers to the burial mounds they inhabited and wight is a Middle English word for "living being" or "creature", especially "human being".[1] It does not necessarily mean "spirit" or "ghost"; it is cognate to modern German "Wicht", meaning small mythical creatures (also "Wichtelmännchen"). Tolkien borrowed this concept from Norse mythology, see e.g. Waking of Angantyr and Hrómundar saga Gripssonar. The name Barrow-wight itself was first recorded in 1869 in the Eiríkr Magnússon and William Morris translation of Grettis saga, which features a fight with such a creature.[2]"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wight

"Wight is a Middle English word, from Old English wiht, and used to describe a creature or living sentient being. It is akin to Old High German wiht, meaning a creature or thing.[1][2]

In its original usage the word wight described a living human being.[3] More recently, the word has been used within the fantasy genre of literature to describe undead or wraith-like creatures: corpses with a part of their decayed soul still in residence, often draining life from their victims. Notable examples of this include the undead Barrow-wights from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien and the level-draining wights of Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game.

The English word is cognate with other Germanic words such as Dutch wicht, German Wicht, Old Norse vættr, Norwegian vette, Swedish vätte, Danish vætte. Modern High German Wicht means 'small person, dwarf,' and also 'unpleasant person,' while in Low German the word means 'girl.' The Wicht, Wichtel or Wichtelchen of Germanic folklore is most commonly translated into English as an imp, a small, shy character who often does helpful domestic chores when nobody is looking (as in the Tale of the Cobbler's Shoes). "

"Wraith is a Scottish dialectal word for "ghost," "spirit"."

------------------------------------------

To me,with my cultural background being mixed,it also seems a bit Sidhe related. The authors above tended to mix their metaphors a bit and we do have noisy Sidhe, like the Bean Sidhe.
A fact I'm sure Rowling riffed from extensively too.

Do they make noise at all,or are they silent?

Have you done any new workings, been on unfamiliar ground, either physically, astrally or mentally,or anything like that?

Been anywhere else 'interesting' lately?

Bought any new/old nick nacks or trinkets or owt?

I ask as this kind of spirit is usually [but not always, mind] a guardian type and they come looking for what they feel is rightfully theirs.

More later, but some more information if you can provide any, would help greatly.

And it also bears asking,if you don't mind, could you have pissed off any other magickians lately, that you are aware of?

[I've had low level nasties sent towards me in the past and they were a bit similar sounding,so just throwing it in there.]

Sounds something like what a lot of people call 'shadow people.' I don't know much about them except that there are a ton of theories as to their origin/meaning/purpose, but it's well worth looking into.

They could also be the 'astral little nasties' people refer to, or even just some kind of emotional construct, an externalized representation of something.

Thank you all for the responses. I don't know much about them, but will tell all I know. They definitely aren't shadow people, I've seen those...these are a bit different. They don't make sound, but can if attacking (but I've never been attacked). Sound may be one kind of attack, but they don't always make a sound when attacking. Their power level seems to vary a lot. They seem to feed off people somehow, I'm not sure what (maybe fear). I was wondering if anyone worked with or who would work with them or have them hanging around all the time? I know this is difficult to answer since I don't even know what they're called. Magickians can send them as you said. They seem to feed off of people with mental issues, or maybe they cause them I don't know.

So,you are not being attacked, but you are being observed.

That's interesting.

How do you know about their methods of attack, have others been attacked in your presence?

Or is this not your first visitation/encounter?

Or...?

Display behaviour, without attack on you personally, could be meant to intimidate you, alongside the watching you/manifesting around you.

That's linked with but aside from the energy levels they have to keep up on,apparently: this suggests servitors/fetches to me and perhaps a weakness in them and /or the sender that could be exploited...

So I'd venture these may have been sent to you deliberately, why I can only speculate on,like I did before.

Perhaps they're reporting back somewhere/You can trail that back to source,if so.

And given that you know how they operate, then you can also know and work out how to kick their arses back whence they came.

If that's what you want to do,of course.IMMV.

I would.
