Tree spirits

I once asked my teacher, (who passed away), if it was possible to talk to tree-spirits. He said he had done so many times. He said that the trees even let him into their "world" one time. He also said that the trees have to choose you.

Can someone please elaborate on this? What is this "tree-world"?
