Meditating on symbols/images - what's the progression?

I began seriously meditating on the tarot late last year as well as getting myself to work with the black mirror more recently and even more recently still I was brought to meditating on a candle (one of the orders I'm in).

The thing that caught my interest - a while back tarot meditation and other techniques was brought up on a Catholic forum, not a member but I noticed certain Catholics who were formerly in mystic orders talking about using the same focusing techniques they used on the tarot to look at Catholic prayer cards, ie. it seems like this technique of reaching inward via images, icons, and symbols has a pretty wide base of application.

My question - as one continues on this path, how does the progression of the experience go? Also how universal is the application of the results? Can it be any painting or drawing or those strictly by artists of some degree of mystic acumen?

So far with me I started setting my 22 major arcana up in a tableau formation (whether my Universal Waite, BOTA, or Oswald Wirth - I'd put Fool on top in the middle and then three rows of 7 below). I'd then stare, did this for a long time. The results of this as well as the black mirror meditations; it's tough to tell what's really happening but as I meditate, as I've been doing recently on just one card and zooming in on it, it'll become more three dimensional in a way, my vision will start sort of swimming or waving a bit of that makes sense, and I'll feel a very definite sensation like I'm going into deeper alpha/theta and as well that something specific in me and beyond is starting to engage.

If any of that sounds familiar - what's usually the next shoe to drop from there? Is there anything I should be trying to gently push or pull psychologically while that's happening which would aid my development?

Things have been progressing well for you in a natural way. All you need do is remain open and receptive to the cosmos and you will continue to grow at a natural pace. Pushing things may not have the desired affect. Chinese alchemists have the concept of "Wuwei", which means action from inaction. It seems that the cosmos is growing your consciousness well. Just keep working in a pleasurable way with openness and positivity and the cosmos will take care of you. BE IN TUNE FOR NEW DEVELOPMENTS!
