the occult on the internet(or lack there of)

Post by AnnaBolton »

Is it just me or is the internet really lacking in information on magick and occult traditins in general...Type in "magick" on any search engine and besides the first page of results the rest is maybe one or two results per page that are actually related to magick...Forums like these(though there aren't many) and Wikipedia and maybe a handful of websites and youtubers are really the only good material on magick I've been able to find on the internet. What is everyones opinion on this and how do you deal with it? Its hard for me to to believe that its because no one is interested in or practices this stuff since there are sooo many books on these subjects....

I have noticed some of what you are mentioning.

Could it just be paranoia? Or that secrecy in occult is more important than collaboration, especially where the general 'public' could be 'observers'?

It flat seems to me; the more you delve into the occult, the more secret you know to be. Every day I am here may be my last for instance.

There are compelling reasons which I would be disinclined to post.

I guess your first observation about the seeming lack is quite correct. However, like many other things also the sharing of the occult stuff is partly over networks which can not be found openly. They build up in forums like this one or on small group meetings. And suddenly there is someone who knows someone who knows someone who worked with that and may can help you with that.

However, there is of course often the presence of paranoia or suspicion, tha's how it is. [confused]

No we are just spoiled today.-
20 years ago I had to travel to the other side of the country to meet with someone who knew someone inside the black dragon rouge, so that I could get some vague information on what they were practicing.

Today I can order the books they used from the comfort of my home. Hell, I can email the Swedish order of golden dawn and ask if I have any questions.

Actually, I've been able to find a lot of info on the internet. A little basic research and some google-fu and it's out there.

I remember quite well how difficult it was to get a hold of information or network back before the internet. I feel old.

I agree with Rosebed. I've found a ton of useful stuff. You just have to have patience perservierance and be willing to put forth the time and effort to search for things. You really need to examine what you do find in order to get the most out of it. Occult growth should be measured in decades not years. This is a life-long journey and is best viewed as such.

I feel more inclined to say that the quantity on the internet isn't too bad, but the quality is usually lacking, or even dangerous in a lot of cases.

That I can agree with. You always have to look at your sources.

Anther thing that's helpful is to google how to use google. There's a bunch of tricks that make using it easier.

Oh, regarding forums:

When you come to a forum where you find interesting posts in a thread, make an efford to read the whole thread (even when it has 100 pages). It is mostly worth a look.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents, I wouldn't say that there is a lack of information regarding the occult online. Searching google, you can find pretty much anything from straight-laced white magic new age silliness to black magic rituals that involve. hitler veneration. I think the trick is that you have to get an idea of what you are looking for to be able to find it...and it doesn't hurt when certain spirits lead you to things either ;-) with that being said, it may sometimes seem like there is a lack of depth to the information because, imo, you can get a good overview of material or a system online but the real Mysteries can't be expressed in print or on google, you have to discover them by actual work. My 2 cents, anyone have change for a nickle?

I think you can find a lot of information, but that,as several of you have said already,is mostly basic and fundamental stuff and it needs filtering and sorting.

I was quite lucky growing up,as the libraries near me stocked a fair amount of useful texts and books that I managed to learn from and there was still a healthy tradition of engagement with and telling of tales/passing down of common folklore and customs among the folk here. I listened and asked a lot of questions.I was a lurker, even then.

But I do also feel a bit old.

I think It's kinda like stocking a larder. You can get a lot of ingredients and raw materials and the more you spend the more you can aquire, whether it's money, time or effort.
But you have to start experimenting with recipes and processes in the kitchen and find the right tools too, before you can bake that lovely cake.[thumbup]
