The runes are not spirits in themselves, but you can improve your rune work by working with odin or nornorna/nornir.

Yeah, those who work with the Norse gods and spirits will probably see a lot more progress in their work than someone who doesn't. But your question was for methods of Magic that don't require Spirit Work, and as palindrom pointed out the Runes are a good example of such a thing. So yeah.

i actually enjoy to work with runes without gods.
just to get to know those "streams" or whatever you want to call them.
sometimes, not often, a god or goddess comes to visit me "inside the rune", and it's a very clear difference between the runic power and the presence of another "conscious being". but i'm not looking for them, for the gods in my runework, so far.
but i do have another ritual i wrote myself, in which i call upon some goddesses from the north, so, there is a certain relationship between me and the nordic stream...

but what i like most about the runes, and about the power of the hebrew letters (i don't know the other alphabeths shinichi mentioned) is that they are simply "power in form/shape", not "conscious power in form/shape". what a miracle...

I've actually met Odin and Thor..
They're very nice men in all honesty! Thor was very umm.. resourceful, and Odin, oh god, Odin was an amazing entity to be around. Possibly the best day of my life.
on hiatus. contact via elsewhere.

I tried "working" with spirits but realized they are simply signposts along the path that past mystics have created to explain everything up until that point.

Once I realized that I sought the spirits or "sign posts" that I was missing or haven't yet seen in my reality. That was a backwards path that lead me away from the source so I gave up on spirits and decided to focus on the source. The All, the consciousness on the other side of the void, or whatever you want to call it.

That has been a lot more useful to me.

Or spirits deceiving from the Source, trying to tell "oh look I have powers, see how important I am, wanna make a barter?" Anyway, the second part of this post is pure gold, a true wisdom!
