How are "phantom vehicles" possible?

How is it that phantom vehicles are possible? People in the late 20th century and in the 21st century report sightings of phantom vehicles. And older stories were of "ghost ships". Cars which they see at night that suddenly vanish into thin air right infront of them in some locations.

Any theories on how phantom vehicles carrying passengers in them or with no passengers seen are possible?

Another noticeable case is with the plains that carry salvaged parts from east airlines flight 401 which somehow are haunted by especially an engineer and their captain. The long-dead engineer appearing to a captain and telling him, "There will never be another crash. We will not let it happen." And they seem to stay and help. If spirits are energy then howcome they act like real people and dissapear when you notice them most of the time? I think you have separate things going on with similar noticed effects. In some you have an echo or after-effect of energy that has left an imprint on a location. What you end up with are either symbolic energetic manifestations of something or someone that has existed going through similar routines, or just a weakening of the veil giving you a "window" into the past as it happened. It can also be tied to highly emotional states where large amounts of energy creates that echo, imprint, or rip in the veil. You might also have someone left behind unable to move on and are pulling these "memories" of things, people, events and are being viewed from this side into the veil.

Or just people hallucinating, lying, or seeing distortions and the brain making patterns of things that don't actually exist. Probably a little of column A and little of Column B.

The physic imprint of the object still persists on some wavelengths that triggers a similar image in our brain.
It's like an image on a photo, It's not really the object as it was but a mere representation of the object.
